The morning sun had just risen to the world, gracing the land with the muted spring hues of yellow, orange and pink. The soft shades crept into every crack, reflecting off of the morning dew, and glistened like a thousand diamond rings. The forest gave a collective groan, a soft sigh, as it awoke, creature by creature.

Xanti cracked open an eye, and squinted at the fuzzy beam of sunlight that drifted down to him through the canopy of tall deciduous trees. Opening his other eye, he surveyed the surrounding area. Dew. Dew covered everything. Every leaf, every tree and every creature that hadn’t found a sheltered place to sleep the night before; unfortunately, this included Xan.

He rose and shook off, his breath misting out before him. His scaly hide had protected him from most of the moisture but he couldn’t help but hate the feeling of it seeping into his mane, or its gentle burn as it caressed his molten hooves.Uneasiness began to wash over Xan. Something was wrong, and he couldn’t seem to figure it out. After a few seconds of contemplation it occurred to him.

That something, that same something that plagued him every couple of months, had come upon him again. Thirst.

This is going to be a long, long day.

Giving a rumble of displeasure, he began to pick his way through the underbrush, towards the scent of freshwater.

The sun. It broke through the eye lids of the female as she rose her head slightly from her slumber. Dark coal eyes peeked through as she let a sigh roll off her nose in a small sound. Exhaustion had it's draw backs and she was feeling every inch of it in her body. Bending her right leg, she moved it out and back in against her body to loosen the joint up before repeating it with the other legs. The sun sparkled down on the spring green coat of the female and her hair was nearly white in the light. Of course, it was not but a hue of soft green with hairs as thin as silk. It was beautiful to say the least and the mare took pride in her appearance. Cleaning her hair and washing was a daily routine to her and she couldn't get over the fact of it. She needed to be beautiful. Her mother had drilled into her head that to make up fro the sour words she spat she must look like an angel itself. Well, Arcadia would have a few choice words for that female if she ever saw her again.

Rising her head up, she let a soft yawn leave her lips before she begun to slowly walk towards a river that she had discovered yesterday. She only came into the woods to get water or to find shelter from the cold. Arcadia was a little smaller then alot of mares but she took it in stride. She enjoyed the fact that she was different from mares of her normal size by more means then one. Shaking her head, she sighed before the sound of running water reached her ears. Flickering them forward, she rose her head and peered out at the water. She was at one of the rapids and it really wasn't safe to get too close to the water. Moving further up the base of the river, she finally found a calm spot to dip her muzzle into the water and drink the water up. The cool water ran down her neck and sent shivers up and down her body. With a flicker of the tail, she continued drinking for she only came here every few days to drink.

It was easy enough to find the river. The scent, which had started off faint, was now almost overwhelming. Xanti was hard pressed not to sneeze continuously. He was already sneezing to some degree and his nose had become plugged earlier on. It was annoying having one of his most valuable senses disabled. It made Xan feel almost vulnerable. Almost.

Eyes roaming, ears rotating; Xan pushed through the last of the forest underbrush and stepped out onto the bank of the river. The water was fast moving and rapids were prevalent, throwing up a constant spray of droplets into the air. Shuddering at the thought, Xan let his eyes travel upriver. More whitewater. Downriver.

Well it’s slightly calmer. On that wry note, Xan tentatively began to make his way downriver, keeping a weary distance from the water. Every now and then he’d flinch as a droplet managed to land on one of his hooves. But it wasn’t too long till the water seemed to be ebb. Xan rounded a final bend and stopped.

The current had dropped off; leaving little eddies twirling in the calmer water. Not that Xan noticed. All his attention was focused on a little green mare drinking from the river. His lips drew back involuntarily, showing his canines, and he let out a muted roar of declaration.
