Welcome to Peregrination's first metaplot event! This is an open RP; any and all are welcome. Though we encourage you to use your human character, if you can give us a good reason why your Malakite is tagging around the very perplexed-looking humans, they can tag along, too. Don't have a human character? No problem! Slide on over to Character Submission to make your own! (Don't forget to check out the guidelines first, though.) This event will run until it is finished; that could be in two days or two weeks (but we'll try not to make it two months, yeah?)
So, without further ado...

To most of the crew, Jhala Vari is an awesome city in every definition of the word. Though the Malakim do not seem to have the level of technology that humans on Earth have mastered, they have still accomplished this architectural wonder; a city, in fact, made of glass, beautiful enough to look as though it should be kept in a museum, but stable enough to hold up to traffic with ease. It is no surprise that so many of the crew has taken a keen interest in these amiable creatures and their remarkable creation.
It is, however, a slight surprise that one member of the Peregrine, one certain Captain Amelia Footliver, is exploring outside of the city.
With the tide once again retreating from the shore, Malakim and curious humans alike were wandering through the Cove – some with a purpose and some without. A bit further removed from the edge of the city, where the water was still ankle-deep, stood Amelia. With her boots tucked under her arm and her toes buried in wet sand, she eased to a squat, tilting her head as she inspected...nothing. As the tide retreated, it had left behind a small hole no larger than some ten inches in circumference, a dark circle that marred the otherwise smooth, sandy landscape. It was not collapsing under the weight of the sand, or acting as a drain to the water that surrounded it. It was just...there.

Rence stared at the city in amazement. It was breath-taking. Beautiful spires, arches... ...everything. The colors dazzled her. After a few moments of staring at everything, however, she started to feel overwhelmed.
Slowly, she made her way down to the Cove. She'd taken her shoes off (she didn't have many, after all), and was letting her toes sink into the sand. She saw Captain Footliver and began wandering towards her. Suddenly, her foot got caught in a hole.
"Oof!" She tripped, landing face-first in the shallow water, the stood back up.

Vince looked around the city, taking in the colors. He soon grew bored, though, and tried to challenge himself. "There's a 2350 peruvian red wine..." He would say, or "There's a 3-day-old scoth that's been in the sun too long!" The latter sort of comments would cause him to chuckle a bit, but he soon grew bored of this, too.
He wandered outside of the city, looking for anything that looked flammable. He knew it probably wasn't very intelligent looking for stuff to set on fire around water, but it was worth a shot.
He noticed Captain Footliver and Florence already on the beach ahead of him, and apparently Florence had gotten her foot stuck in some sort of hole.
He walked up to the two and tried at a friendly smile. "Looking for giant sand crabs or something?" He asked jovially.

The city was beautiful, there was no denying that. It was astonishingly gorgeous, and it was exceedingly generous of the Malakim to open it to the humans. The learning experiences would be wonderful, the presence of the Malakim would enlighten the crew as to possibilities of living on Sartnys, and overall, it would be incredibly important for all crew who could attend to attend.
Juno, naturally, hadn't left with the rest of the crew.
He probably hadn't even been invited. Not that this would have stopped him from going along with them if he had wanted to go. As one of the ship's chief biologists, he was certainly entitled to share in the journey. But he hadn't any reason to want to attend with an enormous crowd, and had instead wandered down on his own time, keeping himself to himself and lurking on the edge of the city.
He hadn't expected to run into anyone as he wandered, barefoot with his shoelaces knotted to sling the shoes over his shoulder and pants rolled up to below his knee, with his bioscanner, occasionally crouching down to spear living things on the small knife he carried, slicing them open and deftly feeding a piece to the machine for analysis. A trail of tiny dead watercreatures spread out behind him in what could have passed for a bizarre Hansel-and-Gretel parody if it weren't Juno.
He caught sight of the vibrant red that was Captain Footliver just as someone went sprawling into the water. Sparing a moment to bark a laugh at the crewman he didn't recognize, he stepped around her and over to Footliver, masking his annoyance that anyone might see him barefoot, much less with his entire lower legs exposed to the world. Vince's presence didn't even seem to register to him, and he looked only at the Captain.
"You've found a hole, I see," he drawled.

When she had first seen it, Alula had stopped in her tracks and simply stared at the city. For ten minutes she had just stood and taken in the sight of the city's many spires and walkways. At first, the color choice had seemed random to her, then she noticed the patter that fit in wiht the city's design.
The entire thing reminded her of a giant stained glass work of art. It made her fingers itch, just wanting to go over the entire city inch by inch and figure out how it was made.
That was the problem with her, when anything caught her attention, she had to figure out how to duplicate it. She'd ended up teaching herself most of the crafts she knew, or at least figured out the theory of them, before she had even begun her scholarship in them.
She wandered, not really looking where she was going, one hand continually trailing along the glass of the city her face never more than a foot away, inspecting it.
She only stopped when after a while she felt water around her feet, and looked down in suprise. She hadn't even notice when the tide had come in, but it gave everything a new aspect. Absent-mindedly, still considering the city's construction, she wandered out into the cove to explore a bit. Unconciously she made her way over to her fellow crew members and captain.

Mira immediately recognized two who would make her unhappy. Neither of the people she had been trying to find were here--which was unfortunate. But she was tired and frustrated, and watching someone faceplant wasn't so bad at all... Where one went, the other might follow; maybe hanging around at a little bit of a distance wouldn't be such a bad idea, at least until rested. And maybe the city itself would be worth exploring later...

Amelia was especially fond of her crew. She was beyond grateful to have been blessed with a ship filled with so many wonderful, talented, interesting people. It was an honor that they all looked to her as Captain (whether or not they agreed with it). She prided herself in her position. However, these things were often a bit difficult to see when seeing Rence trip and fall produced no words or motions of concern - just a heart, snorted laugh.
"Oi, doofus. Nice one," she chuckled like someone talking to their younger sibling, and had her mouth partly open to continue until she caught sight of Vince out of the corner of her eye. She nudged his leg with her elbow jovially. "Nah. Though if there are giant sand crabs, I'd like to find them before they find me, y'know?" Looking rather indifferent towards the wave that crashed against her shins and dampened her pants legs, she gestured towards the hole at her feet. The smaller one that Rence's foot had the misfortune of finding before her eyes did so had disappeared. It was only a small dip in the sand, now, but Amelia could have sworn she saw it swallow a small amount of water before closing up.
Seeing Juno stroll up beside her was only slightly less surprising than finding a hole on a beach that would not drain. Amelia quirked her eyebrows when she heard his voice, then looked back down at the hole as though she expected it to belch forth sand and water and answers. "Yeah. I guess you could say that."
Rolling her pants legs up above her knees, Amelia didn't immediately notice more crew members wandering towards the slowly growing party. "Isn't it kinda weird, though? Don't you think?"

Rence frowned at her now sopping clothes.
"Good thing they're waterproof," she muttered to herself.
"Good thing I'm waterproof," Herman said from her pocket. She casually reached down and set him on mute, then looked up at her captain.
"Thanks. I wanted to inspect the bottom. The sands nice. All soft and not sticky at all."
She watched as various other humans showed up. Oo, she thought, What a party. And- was that- could it be- Juno Dagon was there. She didn't know the man, not personally, but she knew of him. She's heard of him numerous times in counseling sessions throughout the entire trip. She walked over to the captain and stared at the hole.
"Drainage?!" She guessed.

'Weird', that's a good word for it, she thought. The temptation to see this curious thing from a little closer was getting stronger. Mira took a few steps forward--communication wouldn't be such a horrible thing, she reasoned--but still a bit of distance from the captain, at least.
"Drainage would drain."
Well, that came out sounding rather stupid.

To the casual eye, it would seem to be mere coincidence that Jyrius happened to be on the sands at the same time as Captain Footliver and her curious crew. After all, presumably the ambassador had a life. Presumably he went out for walks, and errands, and all the mundane things that seemed like surprisingly universal concerns. One could not live by work alone.
(Not that what Jyrius did could be called work, really. The concept of paperwork seemed to be completely alien to either Malakim in general, or Jyrius in specific. Mostly he seemed to gallivant around and talk to people.)
Regardless, it was hard to miss the humans on the sands. The primates were such a distinctively different shape than the rest of the city's inhabitants. And the moment Jyrius spotted them, he hopped lightly off a blue-violet glass ramp, and set off in that direction at an easy strolling pace. He trilled a greeting to the group in general, inserting himself neatly between them to get a good look at whatever had their attention... the sand? Was the sand tremendously interesting? Did Erf (that was the name of the planet, right, he thought he'd heard someone say it) have sand?
Lifting a tentacle-tip to his forehead, he saluted the Captain smartly -- or his general impression of a salute, anyway. (Where the hell did Jyrius learn to salute? Probably Laurence. Probably best not to ask.) "Good day, Captain, humans! I do hope I find you all well?"

"Well and curious, I think."
It was true. That thing was causing quite a fun range of reactions, but mostly curiosity.

Juno gave Amelia a curt nod, extending a vaguely unsettling smile to everyone else in the general vicinity and wondering how much damage he could do with a limited amount of time in the presence of a member of command. He toyed absently with his little knife as he, like everyone else, stared at the hole in the ground. After a few seconds, he crouched down briefly to better peer into it. It...wasn't very interesting. If there had been something interesting down there, Juno might have been more interested.
"...still a hole," he remarked after a moment, growing bored of the children's beach games and straightening up, stretching slightly so his spine popped and turning to walk away when...
Ohhhhhhh....lovely. The unpleasant smile returned in full force as Juno laid eyes on the Malakite he had heard snippets about. This teal one was called Jyrius, he did believe, and...oh, it was lovely to finally meet him face to face. Rumours, after all, were only rumours, and Juno was never one to believe comments without having tested them himself and seen (or felt) the evidence in person.
"Good day," he answered smoothly, his voice rich and ever-so-slightly suggestive as he gave a short bow to the Malakite. "We are well indeed. Ah, I should not speak for my crew, but I am certainly well. All the better to have finally met you." Oh, he was laying it on thick for this one...and that was just a bit worrying. True, Juno would seduce nearly anything that moved if he was bored, but...this wasn't even human. Or humanoid. It was an alien. With tentacles.
"Ambassador Jyrius, I do believe?"

Mira wondered silently how she would most like to see Juno die. Death by drowning was winning.
((It's been suggested that I clarify that the dislike here is a combination of reputation and first impression being creepy as hell.))

Vince gave a low whistle at the small party that was forming. "Looks like we have ourselves quite the little get-together!" he said.
He squinted at the hole, much like everyone else was doing. After a short pause, he said, "I'm telling you...Giant crabs." He gave a quick chuckle, then turned to see the malakite ambassador trolling towards them.
He was about to offer a greeting in return, but Juno got to it first.
Oi, I knew he was creepy, but him being normal is somehow even creepier... He thought. Well if he can act, so can I.
Vince gave a hearty laugh and clapped Juno on the back. "Oh, come off it you wanker! You're always in a sour mood...Hell, only time you're ever happy is cuttin' something up and lookin' at its DNA!"
Vince gave a smile and extended a hand to the malakite. "Pleasure ta meet ya!" He said, being as friendly as he could.
