Hello, I am getting sick and tired of all this factory made gothic clothing that make people look like they are promoting Hot Topic. I am going to make some some gothic clothing for myself. What I would like to know is what do you think are some syalistic pasts aout gothic clothing that you like.

For me I am totaly into the victorian stuff, but I am thinking about doing a neo-goth victorian blend. What I mean buy that is that I like the flow of the old stuff but I also like the bold lines and strong materials of the new.

I completely agree with your statement about the clothing from Hot Topic. In my opinion, buying clothing from that store completely defeats the purpose of goticism. My plan for next year's clothing is to go to buy jeans from thrift stores and then "fix them up."

You three don't understand the purpose of Gothicism. It isn't about what store you baught it from... Gothics are not punk...

I am pretty sure I know what the point to gothicism is. It is the grasping of social unity between people that dislike the standard social habits. Now yes it is true that it doesn't matter were you buy your clothing when you are a Goth realy they dot even have to be black (they can be white), but they do have to stand out. Having a standing out appearance is one of the goals in being a Goth (if not then why try so hard) so when you all buy your clothing from the same store all buying the same designers and same colors you create a uniform. Now creating a uniform isn't a bad thing, but if you are trying to stand out it kinda weakens the shock affect you have on people. If Goths made there own clothing or purchased it from different designers that shock would be more potent. I also know that Goths are not punk but they are a evolution of punk so they are still rebels. They are rebels because there close, there music, and there mind set are different from common society. I hope that I said hat correctly I have done a little bit of research on gothisim lately because i am gonna design some clothes and I want the clothes to accurately portray the true meaning of Goth.

Weeeelll... technically, since Goth is a development of punk (the dark/romantic side of punk, if you will), it is still about the same sense of individualism and non-norm that gave birth to punk.

Any subculture prides itself in NOT being popular, in not being conformist, in praising the individual.
Of course there is a sub-uniformity, there always is when one tries to belong to any group (think of the black as standard theme).

But this is not a sociology discussion, this is a question of style. We're not arguing whether or not buying off teh rack is acceptable and goth or not.
We're talking goth fashion for the sewing enthusiast.

And as such I'd like to say it is still my dream to create my own corset one day.
In my heydays of gothdom, I made most of my (non-PVC) clothes myself. My style was mostly medieval, with some roccoco and romance elements for beautiful frills.

To answer the initial question: my favourite elements of goth fashion are bondage (corsets, medieval cross-ribbons), lace (especially rich, spilling lace), choker collars, belts and buckles, and wide, flowy sleeves. But I've always been into the softer side of goth fashion. heart

thank you to kikilon for putting a stop to the fight... she makes a very good point. it's about the style, not what it is that makes goth 'goth'.
Truth to tell, I am one of those people that buys from hot topic. But i buy the clothes not to make a statement and be labeled as a goth, but because i like the type of jeans they have.
If there were any elements of gothicism that i admire, it would have to be the flooding sleeves. i honestly love that, and have a dress i wish i could create. i'll post it in the sticky once i get home. Lace though... i have never liked lace. heehee, each to his own. ^_^ But the corsets and the full skirts and everything are trully an awesome style.

I agree with you anime_phreak we are talking about style here. Now maybe I just said it wrong when I posted this thread. What I was trying to say is that there need to be more places that sell and design gothic clothing. I eman right now we have hot topic as a seller and the couple clothing companies the carry. Now lets talk about the style of goth and not the meaning of goth.

ok, I noticed something yesterday when I saw thes two kids wearing black T-shirts and black bondage pants and I notice that one of the had two red crucifixes on the back of her pants. I think that religious symbols are lacking in modern gothic clothing and I think that designers should start putting them one there clothing it realy does give it a whole differant feel. What are your guys thoughts on religious symbols on gothic clothing?

I don't remember if it was this topic I read it in, or another, but Black isn't the only color that are in gothic clothes. I heard that white is another used color. sweatdrop I might be wrong though.

*coughs* I usually try to avoid religious symbols simply because people tend to label you on whatever 'religious symbol' you have on you. *coughpentaclecough* I'm not a very religious person myself, but I like some designs of religious symbols I've seen *nods over to her gorgeous blue rosarie* and own. But since it's a touchy subject to everyone else, I try and avoid it.

*smiles* Well, I don't think there's a specific requirement that goths have to wear black, you know. Though most of the ones I've known do it, and also wear other colors too like purple, and orange but usually they have a majority of black on. *nods* *shrugs* Of course then again I'm also going to be getting 'gothed out' when I go meet my fiancee's parents *nods* If they love him they will endure anything I can throw at them. Well, short of going into detail on our relationship I mean.
