Wednesday, 3/4

The Dallas Cowboys have released controversial wide receiver Terrell Owens, sources told ESPN's Michael Smith late Wednesday.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones did not deny the team is discussing the possible release of Owens in late February.

"There are several decisions on our roster we have to look at," Jones said at the time. "This is the time of year we do that. I'm not trying to be trite, but as you all know we're evaluating players in college, we're evaluating free agents and we're evaluating our own roster. This is an ongoing thing, not any different than this time last year."

The Cowboys paid Owens a $12 million signing bonus just last year, included as part of a new four-year, $34 million deal.

There has been talk since the end of the Cowboys' 9-7 season, in which they missed the playoffs, that they would consider cutting Owens to improve moral in the locker room.

Not only did Owens have relationship issues with quarterback Tony Romo and tight end Jason Witten, but the receiver consistently criticized offensive coordinator Jason Garrett's play calling and his offensive schemes to the point that sources say Garrett does not believe they can coexist.

While the Cowboys were trying to downplay a possible rift between Owens and Witten during the season, the two reportedly came close to blows on in mid-December.

An incident occurred at the Cowboys' training facility when Witten tried to engage Owens in a conversation about a pass route. Owens told Witten to stay away from him and called him a name. The two exchanged words before being separated.

The confrontation came a day after a source told ESPN that Owens believed Romo and Witten -- close friends and road roommates -- hold private meetings and create plays without including Owens.

Owens caught 69 passes for 1,052 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

I don't really know what this does to the Cowboys. They still have Witten and Roy Williams as the main receiving targets, but losing TO could be detrimental to their offensive game-plan.

...And I think that their NFC East opponents can breathe a lot easier.

I love this move.

This is gonna give Roy his chance to be the big target.
We still have Crayton and Austin who are young and have proven they can step up.

Yes this is gonna effect our output on offensive, but this is gonna let this young grouyp blossum into better ones. No more I want the ball, from T.O.'s mouth.

This was a smart/stupid move. It was very smart because it removes the biggest League distraction from the field and locker room. But it was a very dumb move because they take a huge cap hit that they could have basically avoided if they waited until next season.

I think the bigger question we have to ask ourselves now is, Is this the end of T.O.? Teams in the NFL know what kind of a cancer he can be on the field and in the locker room, and as we've seen in recent years, the aging veteran, while still a good, effective player, isn't nearly the play maker he once was several years ago.

So is there a team desperate enough to improve their receiving game by taking a gamble on the trouble making, aging receiver, whom I believe will be 34/35 next season?

I would love to have him in Tampa..except i dont think Owens, Bryant and Winslow could all be in the same locker room without it exploding lol. xd

...and call me crazy..but dont rule TO out in Philly. McNabb isnt happy that the eagles have done NOTHING so far. He wants offensive weapons. Its a very long shot, but could happen

It wont really matter. TO was a big problem for many teams on off the field and for opposing teams. He would probably be what is called a world killer. No matter what he does and where he plays, the only thing he brings is trouble and problems. He is a great player and if he only kept himself in check, he could have been the greatest thing ever in either Philadelphia or Dallas. But as things have gone, a potential player better than any other and maybe even more than Jerry Rice, it was flushed down the tube just like Randy Moss.

Owens will not be suitable in any locker room, because of his character issues, and his me-first antics that disturb a team. I see him getting signed by another team, because he still has a few good years left on the field.

There are probably two possibilities why Owens could land elsewhere. One, is if a certain team/franchise has a hard-a** coach (like the 49ers, with Mike Singletary). And the other, is if a certain team/franchise has a risk-taking head office (like the Raiders, with Al Davis).

I've heard that the Vikings could possibly land Owens. I don't know if this would be a good move, because they have the best youngest player in the NFL, in Adrian Peterson, and they shouldn't let any distractions disrupt his maturity.
