Marvin Harrison refused to take a pay cut. The Indianapolis Colts couldn't afford to keep him without one.
On Monday, the two sides reached agreement on one thing: Harrison will be a free agent.
Agent Tom Condon told The Associated Press that Indianapolis has agreed to release the franchise's all-time leading receiver, although an official announcement is not expected until Tuesday or Wednesday. Marvin Harrison, WR Indianapolis Colts
Colts president Bill Polian told reporters Sunday at the NFL Scouting Combine that the team was trying to rework Harrison's deal to lower the wide receiver's salary-cap number from approximately $13.4 million, the highest number of any wideout in the NFL.
But after the two sides couldn't agree on a restructured contract, Harrison asked the Colts to release him, a league source told NFL Network's Adam Schefter on Sunday.
"Basically, we were not able to come to any kind of agreement, it was not contentious and the Colts have agreed to release him," Condon said in a phone interview.
Here are his Career Statistics
Receptions: 1,102 Yards: 14,580 Touchdowns: 128
Well, I guess it had to be done for the benefit of the Colts in the Salary cap area. It's been great Marvin, but I hardly knew ye.

I can see him landing in Philly. I expect the Eagles to either pursue him (him and McNabb were teammates at 'Cuse), or TJ Whosyourmomma.

Marvin Harrison had a great career. He will end up in the Hall of Fame, and is one of the best receivers to ever play in the NFL.
It's sad to see it end this was. The Peyton Manning to Marvin Harrison hookup was legendary. I always thought that we'd see Harrison retire in Indianapolis, and stay with the Colts during his entire career.
But we have to face the facts. Marvin Harrison is getting older, and he's not as athletic as he once was. He is battling a legal criminal case, about a shooting in Philadelphia. Also, Marvin wants way too much money for a player of his caliber. The Colts did not want to overpay him for his recent underachieving production, and Harrison would not take a pay cut or re-do his contract. I personally think that he should have re-modeled his contract to stay with the team.
...But Harrison will surely find another team, looking for a veteran. He can still play, and he'll help teach the younger receivers.

He is aging, he would cost too much cap money, and he doesn't really fit into our system. If we sign him, all he'd be doing is replacing Amani Toomer. I think that Hixon could emerge as our #2 receiver, with Smith as the #3/slot, and Manningham and Moss will battle it out for #4. What we need to focus on right now is our #1 WR spot. Hopefully the Burress incident will clear up, and he can return to his role as our guy. If not, then we'd have to make a move in free agency or in the draft, to get another receiver.

But if Plaxico leaves, then I'd like the Giants to either make a move for TJ Houshmandzadeh, trade for Braylon Edwards or Chad Johnson (Boldin would cost too much), or just draft a valuable receiver.
