January 109

Rayan bounced uncomfortably on his mount, which was rather ridiculous considering he was a wolfrider and wolves were not meant for riding. Of all creatures, horses had been the ones chosen by their ancestors to be tamed and used for transportational means because they were easy to ride. Whereas a wolf moved with a fluid wave motion, horses had a steadier movement that was much easier to sit on and keep balance. Yet Rayan found himself clinging onto the saddlehorn for dear life, trying his best not to fall off.

Having ridden a wolf for a third of his life, Rayan knew how to ride through the rough run of a wolf. But having never been on a horse until a few days ago, he realized that wolfriders who said riding a horse was easier than riding a wolf have clearly never been on a horse. First of all, he had no idea how to use these reins - pulling back seemed to do absolutely nothing, though he vaguely recalled someone telling him to keep his hands down. But he had to keep his hands up to stay balanced, and all his flailing was probably confusing the horse.

A sudden falter of the horse's step and Rayan found himself thrown forward, so he instinctively leaned forward and squeezed his legs tightly to stay on. But that somehow cued the horse to explode into a slow gallop, and Rayan could only hold onto the saddlehorn and reins as he shouted "STOP! I said STOP!! WHY DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND ME?!", not realizing that he wasn't riding a wolf and horses couldn't understand him.

Passing through the gates of White Shadow, Rayan screamed at the bystanders to help him, but they simply stared at him with a bizaare expression. Finally someone yelled a loud WHOA! from the sidelines, which only slowed the horse down to a sudden trot. That, unfortunately, pitched Rayan forward in his seat, consequently the man lost his balance and found himself slipping off the side. He hit the ground rather gracelessly, rolling out of habit and popping right back up on his feet.

Then he realized the horse was running away from him, so Rayan ran after it, all the while screaming, "No, come back! STOP!! Someone stop that horse!"

A tall, dark-haired figure clad in a leather coat strolled through the fort at a leisurely pace. He ran his slender fingers through his unruly dark hair before sliding his hand down the back of his head to rub at the crink in his neck. Despite the sore spot near the base of his skull, Christian was in a rather smug mood today. Being haughty for no reason other than he could made other people suspicious of what the charismatic man had been up to, and with good reason. You see that one there? the Private informed his companion with a sweeping side glance to an attractive young woman standing in the doorway of a building. She totally just winked at me.

The tri-colored wolf didn't even bother to look in the woman's direction as his rider gave the other human a charming grin. SpiritPlague was, like every other day of the year, bored out of his mind and didn't care what female his bond decided to toy with today. It was very likely that Christian would have paused to go swoon over the woman, however an agitated shout caught both of the males' attention.

"Someone stop that horse!"

Pale-blue eyes flicked up in time to see a horse about to run by. Its saddle held no rider. Runaway horses were not an uncommon sight to the Private as it was quite often for a wolf to accidentally startle one of the creatures. Considering the plea for help had come from a man's voice rather than a woman's, Christian was about to disregard helping the fallen rider all together. But as the man chasing the horse came into view, he deftly reconsidered. At the sight of his brother, Christian couldn't help but smirk deviously. "Oh Rayan~" he called to the former New Eve Sergeant. "You're only going to scare it more if you chase--"
He broke off as a sudden flash of white darted out towards the horse. The man tensed as he thought Spirit was going into another one of his psycho episodes. Much to his relief, the wolf had only shot out to grab ahold of the horse's reins. Still, Christian was wary of the wolf's intentions and he was sure that having a large, predatory animal lunge in the horse's direction probably only frightened the animal even more.

I'm not going to eat it, the wolf muttered tersely, releasing his grip as the man took the reins from his mouth. He looked to where Christian was trying to calm the horse, then flicked his impassive gaze upon Rayan before slinking back a few steps away from the humans.

Gripping the horse's reins tightly, Christian attempted to soothe the alarmed animal with calm, assuring words. He shifted his gaze briefly over to the man who had been in pursuit of the horse and smiled teasingly. "My dear brother, you didn't think you'd come to this fort without me finding out, did you?"

Shouting at the top of his lungs, Rayan continued to run madly after the horse, slightly peeved that nobody around him rushed forward to help him chase down the runaway. Of course, if he had known that running after a horse only caused them to keep running, he might have stopped and waited for said horse to stop at some patch of grass. But of course, Rayan was an idiot when it came to all things not related to wolves.

In his alarm, Rayan ran right by his brother, until the familiar voice drifted to his ears. As he slowed to a stop, a flash of white, black and red ran forward to stop the horse, and the New Eve private watched with growing agitation as Christian stepped into view to seize the horse. "That was the plan, yes," Rayan answered with a slight pout, crossing his arms rather childishly at Christian's patronizing tone - or at least that's what it sounded like to him. Then again, Rayan had a habit of thinking that everything is older brother said to him was meant to mock him. Christian just loved to flaunt his success in front of him, that b*****d.

...well, technically he was the b*****d of the family. But a minor detail that could be overlooked.

"Actually, I was hoping you'd be too busy playing with your toy for the week to pay attention to anything else," Rayan huffed as he stood exactly where he had stopped, chest heaving heavily from his run as he tried not to pant (because that was a show of weakness). He made no move to take the horse back, annoyed that the damn thing had thrown him off (sort of). Maybe asking Rose for a ride might've been a better idea...

Christian tilted his head from side to side in a playful manner as Rayan took on a pouting expression. He was unaware of how he made his sibling feel degraded because he never saw a reason for Rayan not to see him as anything besides an older brother. From Chris' outlook, being a year older was nothing to gloat about. Tipping his chin down, Christian looked at Rayan innocently from under his brows. "You aren't really trying to avoid me, are you?" he asked teasingly with a mock-pout. He knew one of the reasons that his brother had transferred over to New Eve was to get away from him, but he had always figured it was because Rayan wanted to outgrow him.

Crossing his free hand behind his back, Christian offered the reins to the younger Private. "My toy of the week?" he inquired, giving no indication that he knew what Rayan meant, though he could've very well been humoring his brother. "Don't think me ignorant of my surroundings just because I may be flattering a woman. I'll always know when you're here." he cooed impishly with a dangerous glint in his pale eyes as he reached out to give his brother's shoulder a small tap. It wasn't so much a statement, as it was a promise. Stray strands of dark hair fell over his eyes as he inclined his head in an inquisitive fashion. "Tell me then, dear brother. If you're not here to see me, and I doubt seriously that you are, what has brought you to White Shadow today?"

Rayan wrinkled his nose in distaste as his brother offered the reins of the horse back to him, which he took rather reluctantly. He offered the horse an annoyed glower, half expecting the thing to kick him or cower before him, but it seemed not to notice him. If anything, Rayan decided that the horse was rigid with fear, breathing heavily as it stared straight at Christian's wolf. Horses of the Forts were far less fearful of wolves than those from the City, but they never lost that instinctual need to flee in the face of a predator. Rayan held the reins tightly.

"You make it sound as if you have someone following me around," Rayan muttered at his brother's impish response. Then he paused to mull over the thought, thinking it quite possible - Damien sometimes sent someone to follow Riya around, but a snap from her wolf usually rid her of the problem. Rayan squinted his eyes suspiciouosly. "Do you?"

Tugging the reins, Rayan started walking away as he attempted to control the prancing horse and prevent the stupid thing from running him over. He imagined that being trampled by a horse was not very different from being run over by a wolf, and he certainly did not want a repeat of that experience. "Here to see Mother, and then I'll be off," he responded over his shoulders, giving the reins a sharp tug as the horse threatened to rear. How people had ridden horses into battle in the past was beyond him.

Christian gasped dramatically at Rayan's inquiry and placed a hand over his chest in a theatrical manner. "How could you accuse me of such an ugly thing like stalking? There's such thing as a brother's intellect, you know." he apprised in a matter-of-fact tone. A smirk spread across the older man's face as Rayan attempted to walk away from him. He shifted forward to follow, but Rayan's response made him pause.

"...your mother?" he asked, uncaring whether Rayan caught the disdainful note in his tone. There was a falter in his step as he was almost reluctant to follow his brother at the statement. However, the brief flash of disinclination on his features was gone within a second as a coy smile replaced the thoughtful frown that was there just a moment before. With a few long strides, Christian fell into step besides his brother, giving the younger man a kidding leer. "You didn't think you could loose me that easily, did you?" he crooned. He would have ruffled Rayan's hair, but knowing how much distress that would cause the younger private, Christian satisfied himself by merely tousling his own unruly dark locks from his face.

He slung his arm around his brother's shoulder so that the crook of his elbow was hooked loosely around Rayan's neck. "You know, you and I never spend much time together anymore. The fact that you'd rather not see your dear older brother just makes me feel oh-so depressed." he said drearily with an exaggerated sigh. If there was one thing about Christian's expressions, it was that they proved he was rarely ever serious.
The Private peered over at the wary horse before stealing a glance at the wolf following behind and making sure that Spirit kept his hungry gaze off the equestrian. It was then Christian pondered why Rayan was riding a horse rather than Rose today. "Where is your rascally, pink lady-friend?"

"No, your mother," Rayan responded sarcastically with a roll of his eyes, before pausing slightly to glance back at Christian. Only to find the man right next to him and an arm hung loosely around his neck, which made Rayan huff in false annoyance - at least his hair hadn't been ruffled, because it really couldn't take anymore torture after the past week's events. A small shudder ran down his spine as he remembered how many hours it had taken to salvage his hair, no thanks to Alice and a pair of wolves.

"Oh, sorry. Been too busy to see you." Casting a sideways glance at Christian, Rayan then smirked. "Didnt you know? Your mother and I get together every week to talk about your embarassing childhood memories. I do recall she might've mentioned something about wetting your bed when you were ten..." Actually, Rayan had never spoken to his brother's mother, but the story could very well be true. Christian did seem like the type prone to hiding such embarassing secrets - maybe it would have been a good idea to seek out Christian's mother for some blackmail material, but too late for that now.

Rayan then followed his brother's gaze back to the wolf. Darkheart had always been... fond of scaring horses, especially when they came with messengers, so it was only natural for Rayan to be wary of other wolves. But Spirit seemed to be behaving for now... "Rose has taken it upon herself to protect my... virtue," he muttered with an exasperated sigh. "I mean, every time I'm with a pretty girl, the darned wolf comes shoving her face in. Do you know how many times I've had to wash my hair because she tackled me into the snow?" Rayan sniffled and pouted, tugging at a stray strand of brown hair, which he hoped to keep nice and soft for the rest of his life; but knowing Rose, that probably wasn't going to happen. "My poor baby..."

Christian seemed to ignore the annoyed expression from Rayan as he continued to keep pace with his brother. "Tsk, tsk, Rayan." he murmured with a shake of his head. "The 'your mother' jokes are so two centuries ago." He sighed theatrically at the younger Private's lack of witty material before giving himself a 'hmph' in thought.

Rayan's next statement sent a flicker of uncertainty over Christian's features as his smirk faded slightly. The bed-wetting remark wasn't what got him. Oh no, a statement like that was hardly even a ridicule to the older man. It was the fact that Rayan spoke about his mother as though she were still alive. No one had mentioned Christian's mother to his face in years, and it felt unnerving to hear her being regarded now. Did she even know of Rayan's existence before she died? Christian couldn't remember-- No. He didn't want to remember.

Realizing that he had been lightly clenching his jaws together, Christian took a deep breath and tried to pass his lapse of personality off as a lazy yawn as he presumed his care-free appearance. Afterall, Rayan had only meant it out of good-humor. "Oh, I highly doubt that." he noted simply as he tugged softly at the other man's neck with the crook of his arm. "I'm sure your term for 'busy' means attempting to seduce every woman in New Eve that you haven't already gotten your fix from." he said in an up-beat tone with a toothy grin to his brother.

Christian chuckled in amusement at Rayan's reason for straying from EternalRose. "She's claimed you as her territory," he declared teasingly. "And you know how possessive wolves become when someone's trying to invade on their property." he sniggered before casting a wary glance across at Rayan's lush hair. He didn't see what was so important about stylizing one's hair. He kept his own hair in fair condition and was content with letting in fall in slight waves at his shoulders. "The wolf... or your hair?" he questioned at Rayan's last remark.

Rayan pouted as the pressure on his neck tightened slightly, having noticed that Christian had tensed - but he thought nothing of it since his brother relaxed just as quickly. Personally, he always had a hard time when others talked of Telia in front of him, but he had learned to accept that memories were what kept the love fresh in his mind and heart. Resistance and reluctance was expected at mention of any dark memories, but he knew Christian was as lax as he was about such things.

"Attempting? You hurt me, brother," Rayan responded in exaggerated pain, hands moving to clutch his heart as he looked at Christian with wide baleful eyes. He sniffled twice to emphasize his fake sadness, reaching up to wipe at the bottom of his eyes even though there was nothing there. But Christian certainly didn't know that. "I've succeeded in all my seductions, I'll have you know." A total lie, but again, Christian didn't know that. "And besides, I've already seduced all the women in New Eve." If he had a wooden nose, it would no doubt have hit the fort wall by now.

"Anyways, that's why I'm here. Ran out of pretty women in New Eve," he finally explained, smirking as he pulled himself out of Christian's arm. Rayan straightened his collar as he glanced around in search of the pretty women he had been hoping to see. "And no clingy wolf to follow me around here," he continued, sighing in honest relief. A year ago he had thought a relationship with a human female had been difficult, but that was before he met Rose. That wolf was all female stereotypes thrown together and multiplied a hundred times.

Another tug at his brown hair before Rayan turned to mockingly glare at his brother. "My hair, of course!" Though Rose could very much considered a baby given how much attention that wolf needed. By now, he had forgotten why or what had even possessed him to agree to a partnership with Rose. How Darkheart must be laughing at him now from his grave.

Christian quirked a brow at his brother's theatrics. Rayan's attempt at dramatics was almost comical. If were not for the older man's own experience at puppy eyes and falsely hurt expressions, he may have been won over more easily. However, he simply chuckled in amusement as the former Sergeant tried to defend his claim.

"You're as good as lying as you are riding a horse." he goaded with a lopsided grin. Christian had seldom been to New Eve, but news of the infamous fort spread like wildfire to the other end of the city's walls easily. Not to mention the several accounts of which the White Shadow Private had heard about the hot temperaments of some of the women in the opposite fort...

A bemused expression crossed the older man's face as he took into account of Rayan's previous reason for coming to the fort. "And your mother qualifies as one of those women here?" he inquired, his voice laced with a teasing suspicion. Christian slid his hand back into his pocket as Rayan slipped out from under his arm. "I dunno, I think I'd rather have a clingy wolf over a psychotic dead-beat any day." he mused before clearing his throat out in a rather obvious manner. The wolf behind them didn't seem to pick up the hint.

"Concern over your hair rather than a wolf is a rather unhealthy obsession..."

Rayan had a feeling that his brother was not taking him seriously, but his hair was very precious to him! Why, he had been absolutely horrified that time Tehila suggested that it was too long and it should be cut - unfortunately for him, she actually dared to chop his hair off in his sleep. That was why he currently only had long bangs, since he had been sleeping on his stomach and managed to wake up before she could remove it all. A shudder ran down his spine as he recalled that sad, sad day.

But then again, Rayan was rather fond of the new hairstyle, so he had kept it. A good way to remember Tehila by, even if it was a bady memory - most of his memories of her weren't all that great, but you took what you got.

"Why, thank you, dear brother," he answered with a lopsided grin of his own. Many people couldn't see their brotherly resemblance, but when they both smiled like that, it was hard to miss their relationship. People also said they acted the same, but Rayan liked to think he was the more charming one. "I do ride a horse very well. Liked my new method of dismounting, did you?"

A look of disgust crossed his features at Christian's next statement, and Rayan could only stare at his brother in horror. "Excuse me, but why on earth would I want to seduce my own mother?" A grunt of disgust as he shook his head to rid himself of the disturbing image that had just unwillingly entered his mind. "I think you're the one with an unhealthy obsession," he muttered.

"Maybe I should make you spend a day with Rose and you'll see what it's like," Rayan commented as he looked around, catching the eye of some women as he smiled and winked - some of them giggled and looked away, while the rest simply rolled their eyes and ignored him. A reaction, either way. "Then you'll realize that human women are not as clingy as female wolves."

Christian snorted in amusement. "Oh yes," he concurred. "I especially enjoyed the part from when you so gracefully fell from your horse and then chased after it. Clearly you planned it all along~" He remembered the days in the Academy when their similarities were constantly pointed out, including their impish demeanor and attraction towards women. However, Christian always believed he was the more discreet of the two.

"Let's examine that statement."
Christian quipped. "You say you've come here to visit your mother and then boldly announce that you came to entice the women here because the ones at New Eve no longer suited you. See a connection? No?" The older Private sighed and shook his head before his brother could answer. "Think before you speak next time, dear brother. Who knows what else that witty tongue could've saved you from." he noted with exasperation, as though he had repeated the speech several times before. Of course, the notion was nothing more of a mocking tone of an adult trying to reprimand a child; a tease, if you will.

"Why on Earth would I have an unhealthy obsession?"
Christian asked, pretending to look genuinely hurt. "You just got done explaining about all the women you coaxed into sleeping with you in New Eve." he pointed out, noting the last part loud enough for the women in range to hear him clearly, much to his entertainment to see a few turn and cast wary glances in their direction.

"Poor Rose. You really don't give her enough credit. I'd be more than pleased to spend a day with her, granted you take Spirit in return. I'm sure you two would have oodles of fun, now wouldn't you?"

The wolf grunted in reply.

Rayan narrowed his eyes in slight admiration at his brother's quick response at pointing out certain facts, however false they might have been. No, not entirely false, simply working under the wrong assumptions. He shook his head and clucked his tongue in disappointment. "But I never said either of those statements were the sole reason that I am here, now did I? Maybe you should listen more carefully and not jump to conclusions."

But Rayan added a wink after his retort as he threw his heads behind his head, leaning back slightly as they walked along. "And my tongue is more than witty - it's also very skilled at the art of seduction," he commented with a smirk. Never would he have thought that he would have enjoyed a conversation with his brother, but they were both on the same wavelength that it was hard not to have a playful banter together once in awhile.

"Didn't you know? A man is not healthy unless he exercises all his muscles," he explained with sagely seriousness, as if explaining how to ride a wolf. But it was supposedly true, based on the few health books Rayan had read. Not that he willingly read them, but Tehila was an avid reader and she had some interesting anatomy books with even more interesting pictures in them that he couldn't resist. In the end, however, he had been thoroughly disgusted by the full dissections of the human body. Never would he think about a woman's breast the same way again.

Fortunately, that did not stop him from fantasizing about women.

Rayan threw a glance back at Spirit, having only interacted with the wolf a few times and the rest he had heard by word of mouth. Either way, none of the comments were pleasant. Then again... "Maybe Spirit should meet Rose. I wonder which one would kill itself first." Truthfully, it was a toss of the coin. "Just remind me not to be there when it happens."
