Ember trotted along at a leisurely pace, his feet leaving a sunken-imprint of a growing wolf's paw. He had been growing, hadn't he? Even now he felt a little ungainly, like something was off in the way he used to hold himself and the way he held himself now. According to Kael, t'was normal. However, even she had started to get a little curious as to the changes in Ember - his attitude calming ever so slightly (if that were possible), his slight growth in bulk and height....hmmm. They both suspected the same thing, but neither would speak the word.
A near face-plant on a rogue rock, one that TOTALLY came out of nowhere, brought him back to reality. He felt Kael's slight annoyance at having to shift positions so quickly. Hehe. Gotta stay on your toes, especially with spring approaching he stated, looking to the setting sun and the glittering, slowly-melting snow. He and Kael moved safely inside the walls of White Shadow, but soon, the time for battle would come. An odd mix of excitement and apprehension made him shudder a little, but his stride stayed true.
You need to work on paying attention to your footing, love Kael responded, looking down at the fur she was playing with in her hands. The setting sun made the rusty red fur look alive, ablaze almost...fitting, since his name was Ember. She pulled herself from the wolf's mind to give herself a bit of silence, at least as much as she could muster. Could be rather hard to get silence when your mind was always connected with someone else's, but she could make due. The rider had been spending a lot of time alone lately, enjoying the cliche "calm before the storm". The thought had crossed her mind to visit New Eve, buuut....she hadn't done it yet. Probably would not. Besides, Riya would kill her if she knew why, or who, Kael wanted to visit.
She shook her head as Ember trotted along, nearing the wall of the fort. Best to shy away from those thoughts, lest Ember start his teasing again.

"It's close to miiiidnight and something evil's lurking in the dark, Under the mooooonlight, you see a sight that almost stops your heart," A dark-clad figure slipped amongst the trees just outside of the White Shadow fort walls, continuing to sing softly to herself in a whisper as she found the song to be appropriate for a stealthy mission such as this. That, and she wasn't aware of the Mission Impossible tune. Because, singing something like 'Rain drops keep falling on my head' just wouldn't be right for her sneaky approach. It would be idiotic to sing such a song at a time like this. And no one else knew better about the timing of the right songs than Alice O'Conner.
The russet colored wolf known as Flamehaze followed warily behind the human he called his rider. Although it may have appeared that the tall wolf had been forcefully dragged along to accompany Alice in her scheme, that was simply not the case. This was Alice's third "adventure" this month, and quite frankly, the other two did not go so well. One day she nearly had a concussion, the next day, a group of Recruits had attacked them with shoes. In both cases, Alice was nearly threatened by another wolf. In both cases, Haze had to intervene before the Sergeant had her arm ripped off. Today probably wouldn't be an exception. Therefore, Haze had came along to see to it that Alice try to stay out of as much trouble as possible, considering she was a magnet to that sort of thing. He wouldn't view himself so much as a body guard, but more as a protective older brother type who needed to keep this pup from somehow starting a fourth World War.
But how was the wolf persuaded to let his rider go on an outing to White Shadow? Sheer boredom. Neither had much to do that day, so Alice had came up with the idea to sneak over to White Shadow to drop by and see what the situation was over there. Haze was reluctant. Alice would point out that no one would even know that they were coming while the wolf argued that they would look suspicious if they tried to secretly approach the fort. He won the debate by noting how most everyone was allowed to visit one another during the winter. However, Alice was already off, heading towards the forest in attempts to slip into the neighboring fort.
So here they were. Attempting to sneak into the White Shadow fort. While Alice softly sang a song that belonged to a once renowned King of Pop. With no one really giving a care if they were there or not.
"'Cause this is THRILLER!! Thriller ni-" Alice blinked as she received a face-full of fur as Haze thwacked her lightly in the face with his bushy tail. She caught his warning glare that could only translate to something along the lines of 'You're the one who didn't want anyone to know of our coming here. Can you try not to draw so much attention to yourself?' They say a picture's worth 1000 words. Obviously 'they' didn't know that a wolf's glare is worth 1000 different meanings. Very descriptive meanings, in fact.
Alice huffed in a small pout before springing out from her cover from under the trees. She quickly pressed her back against the outer wall of the fort and began to shuffle along the side. Finding an side-opening (most likely used for evacuations) Alice took her opportunity and darted around the corner... only to freeze in mid stride as she came face-to-face with an adolescent wolf and his rider. "Bugger..." she muttered under her breath before quickly straightening out and giving her best 'polite' smile, acting as though she didn't just try to attempt to secretly slip into the fort. "'Evening, lady and gent. Brilliant weather we're having, isn't it?"
Haze, who had not even attempted to try to make himself hidden, sauntered steadily after Alice as she turned around the corner, pausing as she nearly ran into another wolf. He watched her quietly as she tried to assume a more casual appearance. Yeah, like that wasn't conspicuous or anything, he murmured sarcastically.

Wait, I hear something
Ember halted, completely forgetting all about the teasing he was just about to start in on. Darnit! Oh well. He lifted his nose to the air and inhaled a few times, catching the scent of an unfamiliar wolf and an equally unfamiliar wolf-bonded. There was no need to inform Kael of anything since...well, she probably already knew. Being a Seer had its immediate advantages, after all. Anyway. The adolescent wolf sniffed and sniffed and the scent(s) still did not change, so it must be just the two strange individuals. Maybe "strange" was too kind a term, as one of them started emitting an awful howling-type sound, much akin to a sickly child or a....a....an evildemonwitchdoctor!
...seriously? An evildemonwitchdoctor?
It could happen! Ember protested weakly, though his "exclamation" was more like a slightly-higher-pitched version of his normal tone. Tail swishing agitatedly back and forth, he ignored Kael's half-interested pries into his mind and continued sniffing, this time at the ground, his ears pricked back a little to hopefully muffle the awful screeching noise. Ok, "screeching" was a little dramatic, but he was young and therefore allowed to be dramatic. With his nose constantly at work, he moved - or, more fittingly, "crept" - t'wards the noise and the scents, til he was very close to one of the openings to the outside world. Suddenly, that awful noise increased in volume ten-fold - OH, BY THE GODS, WHY?! The wolf shook his head in protest, whimpering like a puppy. Such an awful noise!
It's not that horrible! Kael said, in an almost surprised tone. Why was he being so dramatic about this? It could be his hormones, or the fact that his ears were so much more sensitive than hers, but...this was ridiculous. The red wolf certainly had his moments. Kael's eyes narrowed as he moved forward beneath her, the sound remaining but a soft rustling to her own ears. She had to ask the obvious question - why was anyone trying to "sneak" into the Fort? There was...no need to do so. None. It was winter, and there was no ordinance or rule of any sort that restricted free movement between the two areas.
You know....quite a few things happened around the Forts that made absolutely no sense. And it had nothing to do with the rules, and everything to do with the strange people trapped within the walls.
Kael very nearly gasped when a figure suddenly darted in through the opening in the wall, her eyes widening only slightly in surprise. She felt Ember stiffen and relax rather quickly, his ears pricking forward (since that "awful noise of the evildemonwitchdoctor" had ended) as he suddenly was face-to-face with the howling human. A wolf followed, and soon captured Ember's attention, but Kael kept her blue and purple eyes on the human, a most incredulous look passing over her face. Of course, for the 20 year old, "most incredulous" for her meant "barely-any-change-in-demeanor" for anyone else, so....if it was pointed out, she would be mildly surprised.
"Greetings. I suppose it is, perfect weather for...sneaking in a Fort that doesn't need to be sneaked into?" she commented, cocking her head a little to the left. If this person thought Kael didn't know what was going on...well, she'd be only half-right

Alice blinked a few times as the white-haired rider addressed her before she let her shoulders slump defeatedly. "No one 'round these parts ever tries to do anything new or out of the ordinary, do they?" She asked aloud, though seeming to direct her words towards Flamehaze, who only gave something similar to a shrug in response. "To put it simply," she continued, turning back towards the rider. "When winter comes around and less people see fit to go outside, it becomes quite boring. Incredibly boring, actually. And the cure to boredom can be followed up through drastic measures..." She paused and gave herself a curt nod, believing that the explanation had pretty much summed up the 'sneaking' part.
"As to why I'm here," she continued. "There isn't quite anything to do, or anything that I haven't done, over at New Eve or the Academy. I guess it all comes down to whether you prefer to be attacked by Privates or Recruits. Since I heard White Shadow's been quiet for the most part, I decided to come by to check it out." She summarized with a little wave of her hand. "Assuming this is White Shadow's fort," she noted warily as she took a glance around the fort. It wouldn't be the first time her poor sense of direction would have brought her and Flamehaze completely different. Then again, Haze probably would've noticed if they were going the wrong way.
Remembering that there weren't any Sergeants in White Shadow, Alice looked curiously at the girl. The white-haired rider probably wasn't much younger than the New Eve Sergeant, then again considering Alice's age, no many people were all that much younger than her to start with. She clasped her hand together and motioned toward the wolf and his rider. "I take it you are... Gamma and Private..."
Apprentice, Haze quietly added in to Alice, taking note of the other male's age.
"...Apprentice?" she finished with an inquisitive tilt of her head.

"I wouldn't say never, but...depending on your definition of out of the ordinary, it doesn't occur often."
Kael nodded when the girl finished, offering no affirmation or denial as to whether this was the right fort, or whether or not it was actually quiet - not in an unfriendly manner, just...matter-of-fact. Well, it should be obvious. At least her reason for making the "long journey" made sense, even if having to wonder whether this was the right fort or not didn't. The Apprentice simply assumed, from that point, that she was kidding. It was easier that way, especially when her reason for coming - though logical - was as odd as it happened to be. Actually, come to think of it, this girl reminded her a bit of Ember. A little.
I am offended!
You are most certainly not. Kael responded, inwardly grinning. She heard Ember chuckle and then fall silent for the time being.
With her mental attention again focused on the Rider before her, Kael nodded once more. "Gamma and Apprentice, yes. Kael Icewynd and Ember. And you are....?"
Ember sniffed in the direction of the other wolf, unsure of how to respond, since...he didn't know exactly what rank this wolf was. He wasn't an Alpha, that was certain. Regardless, Ember lowered his head a little as a gesture of respect and/or submission (depending on how it was received), his tail swishing lightly. It was only the second or third time in his memory that Ember had run across a wolf from the other Fort - the first time left a rather bad taste in his mouth. Thankfully, this wolf was not the wolf from the first time. This wolf seemed...either amused, or bored, or annoyed by the actions of his rider. Or all three! Completely unaffected by the latter two emotions, the adolescent spoke up.
"Greetings! I am Ember. May I inquire as to your name?"

Alice crossed her arms over her chest in a nonchalant manner and frowned. "Well, most of the riders at both of the forts could certainly afford to break loose once in awhile. I mean seriously. Mulling around like a bunch cows, just brooding as though someone just di-" the girl was cut of by another warning glare from Haze, which seemed to remind her about all the riders who died during the invasion from the new wave of centipedes that was only months ago. Still Alice believed that the time since the devastating attack was more than enough for people to mourn for their loss and move on with their lives. Sure, she knew how these people felt about the loss of loved ones, but then again, no one had expected her to be grieving for her family for over a decade, did they? Pushing the sore topic aside, Alice glanced back over her shoulder at Haze, who seemed oddly quiet. Right about now, he'd be babbling on about how sorry he was for his rider's reckless actions, but it appeared he was too worn out from the month's events to even bother.
Alice's attention snapped back toward Kael at her introduction and she couldn't help but give a sly grin. "New Eve Sergeant, Alice O'Connor and Beta Flamehaze, here under classified orders, AKA having nothing better to do. Pleased to make your acquaintance."
Haze was looking boredly down at his paws when movement from the younger wolf caught his eye. He blinked up at Ember's gesture and tilted his head to the side in confusion, accepting the younger male's gesture as a sign of respect towards his age since he didn't think he deserved a gesture of submission. He never expected submission in the first place, but something different about the adolescent made him feel more awkward to receive it. His features lightened in amusement at Ember's enthusiasm. There were no Apprentices at New Eve, meaning no adolescent wolves either. It had been awhile since Haze had last enountered one.
A pleasure to meet you, Ember. As my rider stated, I am Flamehaze. Though more commonly referred to just Haze, if you prefer.

Kael cracked a smirk, something that was somewhat rare for her. Especially so soon into meeting someone. This woman was amusing; the matter-of-fact tone she took reminded Kael of the one she commonly used herself...except this version was funnier. The white-haired Apprentice had to agree on the brooding statement, as mean as Ember thought she was being. There was a very good reason why Kael did not like to visit graveyards - she didn't like tottering around in the past like a pup who has not yet opened his eyes. Breaking loose didn't really sound like the answer to the gloom that seemed to be settled on the Fort, but something needed to happen before Kael's stoic demeanor turned into a depressed one. The winter's cold was more than just physical - it was a mood, and that mood was turning toxic.
The Apprentice stiffened a little upon learning the rank of the girl before her, saluting as she had been so rigorously taught to do. "The pleasure is mine, Sergeant." she replied with a nod, her mind furiously trying to decipher this entire package. A Sergeant...'sneaking' into another fort.....why, that just did not seem like something Sergeants should do. Or should have to do. Or something along those lines. As difficult as it was for her to wrap her mind around it, Ember's interjection of I'D drag YOU off to do something like that, actually helped her to accept it. New Eve seemed to be a much lighter, perhaps more random Fort - miss Alice O'Connor was helping to confirm that.
"Do your Classified orders require more sneaking, or are you free to walk around normally?" Kael asked, in a round-about way of asking Alice to join her as she and Ember walked. If she preferred to sneak, well by all means....Kael only had to wonder how she planned on doing that in the stark, white landscape.
Haze it is, then. Ember replied, returning to his normal posture. If I may ask...does your rider ALWAYS do things like this, or is this new? She makes me want to play a game of hide-and-seek.
Oh...dear....was that an idea brewing in his head?
