It didn't take long after the 49ers season finale win over the Redskins to sign Interm Coach Mike Singletary to a 4 year, 10 million dollar deal yesterday. Singletary who took over for Mike Nolan and a 2-7 49ers team led them to winning 4 out of their last 5 games and a 7-9 record to build on for next season.

Some coaches weren't so lucky

Rod Marinelli after leading the Detroit Lions to an NFL first 0-16 season was ousted from Detroit ealier monday morning, but that was to be expected.

Romeo Crennel was fired after 4 season with the Cleveland Browns, after a promising 10-6 record last year the Browns fell to a dissapointing 4-12 including being shut out their last two games against division rivals Cincinnati and Pittsburgh

And finally Eric Mangini was let go after 3 seasons with the New York Jets. Mangini who had two winning seasons and a playoff apperance as the Jets Coach, fell out of the playoff picture by loosing 4 of their last 5 games after being in the driver seat of the AFC East for quite a while.

Several other coaches are expected to be fired in the weeks to come, some who might not deserve a second chance will get them, while others who have done well might get the blame and the boot. So my questions are as follows.

1. Who is safe and who is not? which coaches can we expect to also get fired this off season *Cough* Jim Hasslet *Cough*

2. Who are the top replacements out there? Both the Jets and Browns have already tried courting Bill Cowher out of retirement, but the former Steelers Coach says he is done. Mike Holmgren still has a desire to coach, is most likely to take at least 1 year off from football before making a return. So who are the top Coach prospects?

Marinelli and Crennel both deserved their firings...But I don't know about Mangini. Sure they had high expectations and missed the playoffs, but Eric did have two winning seasons with the team. He also took them farther than last season. And if you ask me, it was the lower coaches who failed for the Jets. Their offensive coordinator really should be let go.

...And I just thought of something...Mike Holmgren just coached his last game with the Seahawks. And the Jets just fired Mangini. If Favre does in fact return next season, then maybe the Jets should offer Holmgren a contract, so the old Green Bay Favre-Holmgren combo could be renewed.

With the current coaches on the market...I was a bit surprised. But at least Singletary has the 49ers playing as a poised team.

Why is it a surprise? They already had him, he improved their season, why waste time looking elsewhere when they are sure to have to pay other coaches at an even higher rate? Not to mention, some top known coaches like Marty and Bill will come with demands that will call for a change to their front office. Were the 49ers to finish the season 2-14 and not 7-9, I'm sure they would have made some huge changes.

Why am I the only person who thinks that Mangini should have been fired? I knew he was going to get fired once the Jets started slipping out of the #1 division spot. I don't even care if he had two winning seasons. In fact, I wouldn't even consider them winning seasons if you only had one playoff game and lost and then missed the playoffs for two straight years especially after the Jets spent millions of dollars for an entirely new team and to get a pro-baller, hall-of-famer, veteran QB Brett Favre. He is not a good coach. He has no connection with his players and he treats a veteran like a rookie as if he's some #1 most wanted coach with some superbowl experience. He does not know how to use the assets given to him. He failed with Pennington and he failed with Favre.

C'mon! How does Pennington come from a 4-12 Jets to a 1-15 Dolphins and end up taking the Dolphins to 11-5 beating the Jets in the final game of the season and heading to the playoffs? How does Brett Favre come from a Packers team that was ONE away from the superbowl to a 4-12 Jets team and miss the playoffs entirely? I don't care if the Jets finished 9-7, they missed the playoffs. Mangini didn't win those extra 5 games for the Jets, Brett did! You have a veteran QB, use his strengths! Don't call your sorry plays!

Anyway, the Jets asked Bill Cowher to coach for them. He refused, of course. His reason was that he wanted to bring in his own staffing team and wanted the Jets to get rid of their GM. The owner refused - figures. That's really why he refused to coach for the Jets, as if he was even thinking about coming back for the '09 season. The Jets are now looking at Marty Schottenheimer. They're pretty much gonna run into the same issue. The GM states that he's willing to give up some of his power to give room to the coach. *shrug* We'll see what happens.

Well it's official. In a not so surprising, but weird way, the Denver Broncos have fired head coach Mike Shanahan. He was the second longest tenured active coach, and won two Super Bowls with the team. But he was fired on Tuesday, following a late season collapse which cost the Broncos a playoff spot.

Well another coach bites the dust.

Earlier today the Denver Broncos let go long time Coach Mike Shannahan after the Broncos failed to get into the playoffs.

SHannahan who was the head coach that led the Denver Broncos to their two Superbowl championships with John Elway in Superbowl XXXII and Superbowl XXXIII was fired after the Broncos surrendered a 3 game lead in the AFC South and lost any chance of a playoff apperance with their loss to the Chargers Sunday night.

Also another Possible Head Coach prospect has entered the fray.

San Francisco 49ers have fired Mike Martz after just one season as Offensive Coordinator. Though Martz improved the Offense which ranked dead last in the NFL 2 of the last 3 seasons to some level of respectability, including getting Frank Gore his third straight 1,000 yard rushing season, his offense still committed more turnovers and QB sacks than any other team in the league.
But probably the biggest reason will be in the butting of Offensive Philosophy between Martz and new 49ers Head Coach Singletary. Martz runs a very pass happy offensive scheme while Singletary wants to go with a Coordinator that will emphasize more of a power running, Smash-mouth style.
Martz was able to adjust well to Shaun Hill's QB style, but still butted heads regularly with Singletary, including the benching of J.T. O'Sullivan, the Turnover happy Martz QB.

But Martz did lead the St. Louis Rams to a Superbowl apperance as their head coach, and was the offensive coordinator for the Rams Superbowl winning team when they were known as the "Greatest Show on Turf"

So Martz enters the fray, as now at least 4 teams will be looking for a new head coach, and several others possibly needing a new offensive Coordinator

Martz never had a good QB in he recent years with the 49ers and Lions. He would work out with a team with a very good QB and a solid running back. Maybe Denver or Cleveland?

Eric Mangini has just signed a 4-year deal to become head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

...and Boston College fired their head coach, after taking up the Jets interview.
