It's ironic because the greatest critic (obviously not anymore) of his beliefs are giving him adulation. Even though the belief was held ages ago, it still remains ironic that the one side of the spectrum marked an event of importance to the opposite side.
Is it ironic when someone or something takes action to help rectify their mistakes? Would it be ironic if bush apologized for no child left behind?
I think not, instead I consider it to be honerable to be able to admit that sometimes you were wrong.
I would never laugh at someone for admitting that they made a mistake in the past.
