Greetings. For the longest time, I've been a passive fan of steampunk, and never thought about dressing up in the style.
I always wanted a pocketwatch, though. And since joining this guild, I've been inspired to slip some more steam into my wardrobe. So where better to start than a good chronometer?
Unfortunately, prices seem to range from $20 up to and beyond $300. I have no idea what a reasonable amount is for an item such as this.
As far as quality goes, I don't want it to be a piece of crap that will break on me. At the same time, I'm not worried about passing this onto my children, and my children's children--so it doesn' have to outlive me, either.
I know its a vague area--but what should I pay for a decent pocketwatch? Not shoddy, not top of the line--just...decent.
I live in the US, by the way, and an incapable of thinking in anything but USD. If need be, I can use a currency converter, so just make sure to mention if you're talking about some other kind of dollar.

I'm fairly certain Wal*Mart (heretofore referred to as Wally World) has some good quality pocket watches without very much on the way of high prices. I personally have one with a picture of ducks on it from a few years ago when I had a 'pocketwatch!' phase. A friend of mine got a gold-toned watch for roughly $12 a few months ago.
Other than that, you could check pawn shops. Look for cheaper watches, because a watch is a watch (in my opinion) and you don't want to pay $300 for a watch that may not work right (since it is second hand).

I can't imagine anywhere where you could get a quality one for less than a 100, but good places to start are Wally World, of course, Sears, and Kohls. In fact, Walmart and Kohls will have a good selection on their website. Only buy from places like Kmart and Sears if it's truly a good deal and you're in-store, because their customer service is sporadic and fairly unpredictable I've found.

I've got a relatively decent one from my local Target for $20. However, being pewter and relatively unembellished, it isn't the most steampunk thing I own.
A good friend of mine, however, purchased a gorgeous but broken pocket watch at a flea market for $5 and managed to fix it.
