I was thinking of modifying an old yellow gameboy pocket to look steampunkish. Any suggestions?

If you don't know how a gameboy is put together, a removable cover would be easy.

Hmm... I quite fancy that idea, seems the sort of thing that could looks very nice indeed.
Brass paint seems an obvious option to go for - although one must be careful with the screen and buttons and what not. Upon that, making it look aged and metallic all over (I think) would be good. Following that, adorn it to taste with all sorts of bits and bobs. Personally I rather like the idea of making it look like a scanner of sorts, with various protruding antennae (a small spark plug might look good) - as well as various dials if that can be managed. Go to an old electronics store, they might have spare parts and what-nots you could use.
After that, I would try to make a leather pouch for it as well. If you can manage it; perhaps giving it a front cover - so that when closed the only visible part are things coming from the top.

What about steampunk nerf guns? And I greatly covet these chucks: Not really Steampunk, but it begs the idea of steamy chucks.

Dixie Dellamorto Like this? ...er... is this you? haha No, that is not me. Those gears pasted on look slightly tacky... @Liesmith Loki: Holy fishgods, those Greek mythology shoes are SO COOL. I wish I had seen those before I went and painted gears all over mine.

Those gears do give that Classic GameBoy an unpleasant sort of kitsch atmosphere.
I think the Captain has some excellent ideas. If it weren't for all the sentimental value in my old GameBoy, I might just do some of that. Though, it doesn't work, and I've been meaning to purchase a working on from that most reputable Ethernet Auction House (eBay). Hmm.
Aside from an antenna or sparkplug, the popular extended magnifying glass might do nicely, placed over the screen. Might be difficult to attach one without it becoming too fragile. Brass or copper paint is the easiest option.
The inner workings of a GameBoy or GameBoy Pocket are very resilient, not fragile at all. With a Dremel or other similar small rotary device you could probably do some amazing things. Oh! Hoses! Find some small hoses, and have it look like there's a hose (or small copper piping) coming from the battery compartment, or up along the side of the case.
If you're really feeling creative and dangerous, you could chop out the battery compartment, assuming you want it to remain functional, and affix the entire electronical workings to a carved wooden and brass frame or case. You could cover the buttons with items that reach down through the case to manipulate the old buttons. If that sounds confusing, it basically be one bigger button stuck over the old buttons, but the thickness of the wood might disguise this.
