I would wear a wench top as an everyday blouse...
A stripy one. Horizontal stripes FTW!
  To the PROM!
  If held at gunpoint.
Especially on Abraham Lincoln's birthday! Go Abe!

I've been trying to find a pattern for the shirt I would like to make, but instructions, patterns, or even a picture of the shirt I want are all eluding me even after several Google searches. I'm hoping some of you costume-savvy sewing gurus might be able to help me.

I like the wench-style peasant tops that seem to be so popular at Ren Faires, and in pirate costumes especially. A pretty simple-looking top that's kind of like a chemise, only shorter. They have a simple elastic neck so you can push the sleeves down and wear them off the shoulder, or keep them on your shoulders as you prefer. They have simple poofy sleeves. The bottom just kind of hangs/flows. They seem like they'd be easy as all get-out to sew and I want to make one out of regular fabric (instead of the usual muslin) as an experiment (I think it would be a really cute shirt just to wear with jeans).

Problem is, I don't know how to go about it or even how much fabric to buy... like I said, it seems like it would be really simple to make, but at my very-beginner sewing level, I'd need, if not a pattern, at least some instructions. Even a picture would help, because my mom is pretty good at sewing and gives me tips when she has the time, so she might be able to help me if she's got an image to work from.

Do any of you who like to work with costumes know how I'd find a pattern or instructions?

This is a site for a descent pattern and instructions:
http://www.festiveattyre.com/research/chemise.html

I talked to my costume history professor and she said that the instructions are pretty accurate if not a little modern to what was done back in the day.

Last time I made a chemise for ren-fair I just bought fabric the length of my arm span, laid on it in a T with my shoulders just under the fold, had someone trace at least four inches around my body and mark where my shoulders were, then I cut it out, cut out the neck line, sew in a draw string, sewn and finished the sleeves (I left the selvage edges for the shirt bottom), and ran off in search of a corset rolleyes Of course that's the lazy way to do it...

Oh hey, thank you very much! biggrin

I have some crazy, funky-fun stripy fabric to use. Of course, I found out later from my mother that the fabric I chose might not end up working out so well, because it is a knit. I wish I knew jack about sewing, lol! We'll see how it turns out, mom says it'll be fine for practice.
