It had been a hot day, to say the least. The sun was beating down fiercly on the earth, sending all but the lizards - they were busy sunbathing - scurrying for shade. But Alexiel, being the innovation and imaginative little soquili he was, had thought up an unparalleled and brilliant solution! He would go jump in the river! It was a fantastic thought, the nice, cool water running in rivulets over his scorching body, bringing his temperature down to something a little less than the scorching. And he could fix his dehydration by quenching his thirst at the same time. Truly a remarkable idea.

Or it could have been, if he had been either something without wings, or had thought to hold them up a little. But of course, he hadn't. And so he had plunged straight in, eager to feel the relief the water would bring. And honestly it had been great for a while, Alex had lounged about in the river, amusing himself with a few twigs that would float downstream and such. And then he tried to move. Which would seem like it would be something easy to do, but when you had four wings and hundreds of feathers, each of them soaked through with water; things became a little more difficult.

Perplexed, Alex just stared at them, why were they so full of water? The rest of him wasn't. He sighed, stupid current. Without it, this whole thing would have been a lot less difficult. As it was, he had to drag himself across the surface of the water, and coming out finally on the other side, looking a little worse for the wear. With a snort, he plopped himself down on the grass, lying his wings out to dry, and trying not to look like a drowned rat.

She could hear the soft and very welcoming splish-splash of the water nearby. The blue haired unicorn quickened her pace, anxiously searching for the first signs of water. It was warm outside, too warm, and the little filly wanted nothing more than a nice cool drink! Step by step, Zara pushed her way through the small patch of woods and summer underbrush, tail swishing rhythmically behind her.

As she walked, she hummed a soft song, the tune made up all her own. She herself hadn't been blessed with song in her family but she tried, and one might call her voice fair. Music went hand in hand with dance and so it was that the little filly happily trotted in time. Step, step, step, tail swish, tail swish, step. And one, and two, and repeat. . .

Movement was her domain and Zara couldn't keep herself from dancing even while walking! Especially when she was alone and had no one to entertain her. The little princess didn't yet care to perform in front of others - she was still learning, mind, and didn't want to be made a fool - but it was one these rare moments Jaslyn, Baldev and her sisters were away that she could really let loose and dance.

Graceful as ever, poised and doing her best to remember to step lightly upon cloven hooves, the little filly almost didn't notice the white winged bedraggled form out by the river. So intent in her posing, in offering a slight bow to a dance partner that didn't quite exist, the little filly's song and small giggles died as she, mid-spin on her hooves, caught sight of Alexial not more than twenty feet away.

At first her eyes went wide with alarm, noticing that the sea-bird wasn't a bird at all but a foal just like she! But curiosity soon replaced her moments embarrassment and giving a self-deprecating giggle her drink was forgotten. There was something new to discover, something white and fuzzy and full of feathers and water! "What happened to you?" She asked softly, trotting lightly around the little colt, intrigued.

He was no unicorn but she'd never seen someone covered in so many feathers! Winds were just another lesser, but what was this one? Oh . . wait. . . WAIT A MINUTE! He had wings similar to Ariel~! The one mare whom had told her the story of the unicorn and the stallion and kalona! Was this little one part of that breed too?

Well, he did have lots of feathers. . . she just didn't realize they came in foal size too! Blue eyes went bright and she chuckled happily, offering him a polite fancy little bow, just like her father and mother had taught her! One had to have manners, after all, even if one's acquaintance looked quite the mess. "Are you okay?" Her brow knitted a bit in concern, unsure if all winged ones looked so disheveled after a swim. It was hard to tell if he was healthy or a mess. . .

As he lay there, faint sounds of music drifted to his ears, he couldn't yet tell where it was coming from, but it was a pretty voice. Alexiel raised his head, perking his ears as he tried to find where the music was coming from. It was hard to tell yet, it was still faint.

As he waited, the voice came closer, and he was able to tell it was from somewhere in the woods, and drawing closer with every note. Curiously, he waited, until at last something emerged from the underbrush, singing and dancing with an invisible partner. On closer inspection, Alexiel found that it was, in fact, a filly. Though like none he had ever encountered before, and not just because of her song and dance, though he'd never seen that before either.

First of all, her colouring! It was so...so..well so colourful, with such an intricate design on her. He looked down at his own, fairly simple vanilla coloured coat. Plain compared to hers. And there was more. Her tail had no long flowing hair, only a small tuft at the end of a long, smooth tail like that of a lion. And from the centre of her forehead, sprouted a small horn.

Alexiel had never seen one such as this before, and wondered what she was. She had a horn! Wings he had seen plenty of, but never a horn, and never a tail like hers. He waited for her to notice him as he watched her, and finally she did, giggling at the sight f him. He supposed he probably must look like quite a sight, all waterlogged as he was.

"Well...I was playing in the river," he said, standing up with a bit of struggle in an effort not to look quite as pathetic. "And, um...I guess my feathers hold a lot more water than I thought..." he finished off slightly lamely. "I'm okay though, just...wet."

He smiled sheepishly, and awkwardly bobbed his head, trying to imitate her bow and then shook out his mane quickly, being careful not to hit the filly with any flying water droplets. Well, this was a little embarrassing, but the filly did intrigue him. He'd never seen anyone like her before. Hopefully she wouldn't mind his less than presentable appearance. At least, until he dried off.

Zara was pleased to see that the water-logged soquili wasn't hurt or wounded, aside from some bruised pride. Sadly, such bruises weren't the kind that the little filly could heal. Only time and perhaps a little tender care might fix such a state. . . . Or, in his case, a good soak in the sun! She had never been interested in having wings herself, but she had to admit the pretty feathers could look nice on a soquili; part of the mare figured if one wasn't lucky enough to be born a unicorn than a wind or extra-special-wind like this one and Ariel (she had forgot what they were called) would probably be the next best thing.

"I wouldn't think the light, fluffy things would soak so much water either," she admitted, watching him struggle to his hooves. Whenever she'd found a stray bird feather it had always drifted so softly within the breeze; they were gentle and frail and otherwise delicate! So to see them soaked through with water was amazing. . . and from the looks of things, the little foal was being weighed down by the weight.

"Hopefully they'll be quick to dry! I've seen some water birds hold their wings out while they sit in the sun. Maybe if you pick a pair to dry first instead of both at once?" She didn't know if wings were like having an extra set of legs or not but she could only imagine stretching out both at once might get tiring.

"But forgive my rudeness!" The little filly stated hastily, almost gasping in concern. She glanced around, hoping her father wasn't lurking somewhere in the shadows and ready to berate her for first and foremost interacting with non-unicorns and secondly being so rude and not offering him her name! Etiquette, she reminded herself, she had to have etiquette if she were to grow in to a fine lady! "I'm Zara~! And it's a . . . it's . . it's nice to meet you!" That was proper, wasn't it?

Tossing back some of her blue mane, the little filly grinned, glad she was on the road to making a new friend. It wasn't easy being a lady in training but she would do her best!

When she made the comment about feathers, he nodded, in wholehearted agreement with her. He hadn't thought that feather's could get so waterlogged either! Because honestly, they looked quite floaty, and he had imagined that they would sort of be a little more waterproof than they appeared. Or at least, they would be like the rest of him, and just dry of fairly quickly. Evidently, Alexiel still had much to learn about feathers, especially how they behaved in water.

One pair at a time? Well, that seemed fairly logical, and he wondered why he hadn't thought of it. Maybe she was just very clever, or maybe Alexiel really did have a lot more to learn about wings than he thought. Either way, her suggestion seemed good, and he folded the bottom pair back, fanning out the top ones to see if they would dry more quickly this way. It certainly gave them more surface area, not to mention it was much easier on his joints only holding up one pair as opposed to two.

The colt had been fairly absorbed in thinking about this concept, so when Zara suddenly gasped, he whipped his head up, a little startled. What was she so suddenly remembering? He didn't think she had been rude at all... Oh right! Introductions! Well, he had completely forgot about that as well, though had he remembered earlier he doubted he would have taken it quite as seriously. Perhaps his manners were lacking then, if it was such an important issue that she felt the need to apologize. Alexiel blushed, well, he supposed he'd know for next time anyways.

"Oh, it's um, it's fine. My name is Alexiel, nice to meet you too." He said, trying to sound as proper as she had and failing a little. Obviously he was not as trained in the art of proper etiquette, but hopefully she didn't mind terribly. Maybe he would be better at it if the words didn't come out of his mouth quite so awkwardly. But he had never been one for any sort of acting, or just general outgoing nature. Though maybe with a friend or two, it could help him. He smiled back at her, maybe this filly could help bring him out of his shell a little. She certainly seemed to know what she was doing anyways.

It pleased Zara to see him following her advice and instruction; that was right, she wasn't just a silly girl! She was a lot brighter than some soquili gave her credit for. . . And this little foal was actually heading her word! With two sisters to contend with, the young filly couldn't help but be pleased and her pride stroked . . . . just a little.

Pink eyes caught sight of a darkening nose and she gave a little shake of her head in apology. "I'm sorry - you might not think it rude but I shouldn't have been so thoughtless!" She glanced around, almost nervously and switched her tail in a moments agitation. "If Mama and Papa found out I was being so thoughtless I'd be in lotsa trouble," she admitted, ears pinning for just a moment. Oh, she loved her family very much, but sometimes it was hard to remember all the lessons and rules of beauty, grace and etiquette. There were certain moves one had to make, a bow here, a kind word there, and all sorts of proper responses.

Sometimes it was more than a little overwhelming. . . . but such was the price she paid for acceptance. If she wanted to be a Lady or Princess she'd have to work hard for it. . . even when meeting water-logged winged foals by the river.

"Your family isn't very strict about the way you talk and act, are they?" She questioned innocently. If he was out swimming in a lake all by himself than they coldn't be that demanding; it amazed Zara how frequently she sneaked out of sight from her parents and got away with her own misadventures.

((Apologies for the short, crappy post. x_x; I'm getting tired me thinks. Sleep soon. <3 ))

Alexiel tilted his head slightly, what was Zara apologizing for? Not introducing herself earlier? That's what it sounded like she was apologizing for anyways, though he couldn't be certain...She was very polite though, he definitely could give her that. Her mama and papa sounded quite a bit different than his though! His mother had never really drilled him with how to be proper, and compared to what Zara's must be, his family was probably very casual.

Briefly, Alex wondered if this was a bad thing, Zara seemed horrified at her lack of introduction. But then again, her mannerism seemed very, what was the word...high class maybe? So perhaps it was natural to her to be very proper, just like it was natural for him to be polite...but still casual. Maybe that's because he wasn't high class. But he wasn't sure he would want to be, he would probably forget all the time to do the polite stuff and introductions and being talkative...he found that a little difficult. Talkative was not really him, and he wasn't usually the first to speak, so the whole etiquette thing was sort of lost on him before it could really come into effect.

Fanning his wings slightly as he listened to her, he was pleased to find that they were indeed drying, little by little, though the breeze helped. Zara was quite clever after all. Maybe that was part of the etiquette thing too.

"My family? Um, not really. My mama tells me to be nice, and to be polite and not say mean things. But that's mostly it. I don't really know very much about etiquette," he explained, hoping to explain his manners, which weren't nearly as polished as hers. She was very good at the manners thing, and Alex wondered if he would find it easier to talk if he became better at manners. Maybe. But then again, it was probably just his personality.
