Kublai had spent a little too much of his day proclaiming his greatness. Sure, the only thing that really listened to him were birds, but that was better than nothing, right? He swished his tail behind him as he approached the river for one last cool drink before the sun finished it's disappearing act and the moon would take over the sky. He was never a huge fan of the night, as he couldn't see too well in it, but at least there was enough light in the sky to keep him comfortable at the moment.
He slowed as he neared the water's edge, dipping his muzzle into the water. He didn't drink at first, instead bobbing his head a bit to splash some water around. It felt good after a warm spring day, and it did make him feel like a colt again, no matter how foolish it might be. He finally began to drink slow, delicious gulps of the cool clear water. Delicious! It felt like the whole river was his, no one around and too much good water to drink up.

A giggle sounded from across the banks as Kublai dunked his nose into the water.
"Having fun, colt?" Brenna asked, her eyes bright. "It WAS hot today, I'll agree with that." She tossed her head and walked up to the stream to snatch a quick drink herself. A breeze blew across her back and she shivered, pleased at the signs of the approaching night.
Overhead the stars were just begining to show as the sun sank into the west. Everything was so much calmer and prettier at night! ... and besides, all the blue and silver shading made her feel like a piece of the darker hours herself.
"Don't you just love this time of day?" She grinned at the stallion across from her, flicking her tail lightly.

Colt? Kublai was instantly on the defensive. He was no colt! While he wasn't old, he wasn't so young and foolish anymore! As far as he knew it, he was awesome, and that was that!
He offered a small snort and a quick pawong on the ground, peering through the evening light to see that indeed there was someone else, she was just on the other side. And had blended in a little too well. Where was his great scouting techniques? Bah!
"At times I do," he said, puffing up his chest a bit. "Always the best time to relax and let loose from a long day." Hopefully she wouldn't make fun of him for saying that.

Brenna grinned at his snort, but didn't offer any other sharp comments. Indeed, she wasn't exactly a wise elder either (thank god)! She didn't think she could stand it if her muzzle started to grey, or her glorious forelock started to thin and fade...
It just didn't bear thinking about, that's for sure!
"Is that what you're doing now then? Had a long day?" She might not have had a long day, but she was planning on having a good, long, entertaining night.

The stallion was tempted to snort again, but decided against it. He didn't want to look like he had grass stuck up his nose, and besides, maybe she'd make some sort of comment about that.
"I was busy all day," he said, quite proud of it. The birds would sing his praises, he was sure of it! Then everyone would know that he was the great Kublai, ready to help all in need and become knows everywhere! Or so he hoped, anyway.
"The evening gives me time to think about the next day," he said with a grin. He bobbed his head over at her after he raised his head back up, as if gesturing at her. "What about you, hm?" He'd admit, he was curious. Did she have wings, or was the air playing tricks on him?

"Me?" She echoed, giving herself time to consider it. "Well... I didn't really do that much today. Ate some grass, took a nice flight, and then a nap." Brenna smiled. "Since I don't sleep too much at night."
She fanned her wings out, letting the breeze ruffle her downy feathers and lift them up. Maybe she'd go for another flight later... the weather was perfect for it, after all.
"So you had a busy day, hmm? Doing what, if you don't mind me asking?" He seemed kinda uptight... maybe it was just him, or maybe it was the result of a hard day's work.

Kublai couldn't help but raise a brow at the appendages on the sides of the mare. So....were they wings? Or just things that were dangling off of her back? He couldn't tell from here, and it was starting to drive him nuts!
"Why, training to be a hero!" He wouldn't mentioning the heralding of his greatness. Naaaaaaah, she could see it for herself if she wanted! "It's a lot of work," he said with a huff, though it was quite a proud huff at that. He was going to be great, the world just had to watch out for him!
"So um....are those weird thingies? Or....what? .....wings?" he couldn't believe he asked, but he hadn't ever seen those on a soquili before!

"A hero, hmm?" She raised her eyebrows. "That sound like hard work. Have you saved anyone yet?"
Brenna followed his gaze to her back. "... wings, of course! You've seen a bird before, I imagine?" She asked impishly, and she spread them to their full extent. Indeed, she couldn't help but be a little proud of the way her feathers shimmered in the fading light.
"And before you ask, yes, they DO work." She canted her head to the side, a sly smile panting it's way across her muzzle. "Would you like to see?"

"Not yet," he said quietly, his tail swaying behind him. Hmph. He would, some day! He just....had to find the right soul to save. And maybe actually someone in trouble, instead of everything fine and him just having to claim there here he was, waiting for his shining day in the spotlight! ....which, well, wouldn't come in the darkening light of the evening.
"Fly? Is that possible?" The idea was beyond his little imagination! One, actually flying, when you were not a bird or a bug? No way! He didn't want to outright say that he wanted to see, since a colt would certainly say something like that. Pouncing on someone to show something off that you really wanted to see. He'd just...hint that he was interested in it. That was...good, right? Fool didn't know what he was thinking, but he judged that if he wasn't careful she'd make fun of him. Hmph.

"Well." Brenna flicked her tail and smiled. "Maybe someday I'll find myself in need of saving - and I'll know who to find."
... but since she didn't plan on ever NEEDING to be rescued, the dark mare really didn't think she'd need a hero. But she supposed it wouldn't be BAD to have someone around to help her out once in a while. Though somehow she didn't think that's quite what this boy had in mind.
"Oh, sure it's possible!" She admonished him. "Haven't you heard of Kalonas? They're the ones you'll be most likely to play hero against, you know."
To demonstrate the truth of her first statement, Brenna spread her wings and gave a few strong flaps. Though the wind wasn't strong and she was holding herself up by strength alone, her hooves did indeed rise up to skim the top of the stream. She glided across to land closer to the stallion, eyes sparkling with mirth as she waited for his reaction.

Kublai was stunned when he watched her seeming to flex thise...those wings! and she easily skirted over the water like she was a bug that could run on the water. It completely boggled his mind. He had found out that some could actually have wings, and in the next moment learning that they could actually fly with them?
Obviously he still had a lot to learn before he became some sort of hero. He needed to know everything before he was going to be a super awesome hero. He had to be ready for anything and he obviously wasn't quite there yet.
"So it really does work!" he exclaimed, his legs a bit tense as he took two steps back. His eyes glimmered with young curiosity, but the whole ideal almost seemed just as repulsive. Perhaps because he would never know what it would be like.

Brenna grinned at the look on his face - she'd seen it once or twice before and it never failed to amuse her.
"Of course it works, love!" She chastised him gently. "Why else would I have them in the first place? As decoration?" The dark mare laughed; it was a soft, rich sound. "If they didn't work, they'd be quite the nuisance."
Seriously, she was ALWAYS catching them on close-together trees and in brambles, and as for the care they required... well, let's just say birds were better equipped to preen than she was. But oh, to FLY.
She wouldn't give it up for the world.
"So." She continued, arching one eyebrow. "You've never seen a soquili fly before, really?"

"Well, I-" Kublai fell silent, dumbfounded. He had never seen them before, so what else was he supposed to think! Foreign! While he wasn't completely repulsed by the idea, it was still so very odd to actually think about a soquili actually flying.
"No! How else was I supposed to know what....those were?" Oooh, he was surely slowly losing a bit of his composure now! "I've never seen them before in my life!" None of his family was like that! They were all just regular old soquili, and what he had assumed everyone else was like as well. Not shallow mindedness, just a lack of knowing everything that was out there in the world.

She couldn't imagine NOT knowing about all the soquili! After all, she'd met a Kalona once (a handsome one, at that!) and she'd talked to all sorts before. He must be really... dedicated to his hero training.
... or something. Brenna snorted softly.
"Well, maybe I can help a little with your training then." She offered, sidling closer. "There's only so much you can do or learn on your own, after all." The mare smiled and ruffled her wings loudly, emphasizing the point.

"Help me?" He wasn't sure about how she could help him. He wasn't actually training training, and if she found out....well, he had a hunch by the way that she acted that it wouldn't be a good thing. Fodder for her to make fun of him, perhaps.
So maybe he'd just have to play it off as no big deal? He let these thoughts rush through his head as he tried to figure out what would work alright.
"Well, it is sort of late now....isn't it?"
