"You want to do what?" Anna looked up from her sheet music and stared at the young puppy girl in amazement. Lately she had begun to appreciate that fact Gam had never been this young.
"Park, pway! now!" Shayleigh tugged on Anna's short skirt. Quite obviously she wasn't going to let her guardian do anymore work until her need to play was satisfied.
Ten minutes later Anna let go of Shay's hand and watched the young girl race off towards the swings. She shook her head and made her way over to a bench. "Please be careful. I haven't got insurance for you yet!"
Shay stopped with a bug half way to her mouth and with a pout let the small insect go. Stupid Anna didn't let her do anything fun. She sat in the sand and began to make small castles, her own little town.

A small pebble came crashing down in the center of the tallest turret of the town. A black haired boy grinned and loaded another, reddish, rock into the center of his tiny homebrewed catapult, made of sticks and grass and a carefully placed hair rubber-band. From the supports stuck one jaunty black feather, the kind which littered the boy's arms, sandy from the ground on which he was propping himself. One eye closed, he lined up the shot, punched a few numbers on a playfully coloured pocket calculator, then nudged it to the left slightly. Firing, the red pebble completely demolished the rest of the turret, and he lifted a small fist in silent victory, spraying sand from his feathered arms.

Shayleigh fell over onto her butt and looked around for the source of destruction. Her eyes narrowed when she noticed the young boy lining up his second missile. How dare he! He hadn't even asked her to surrender or given her chance to get her build a wall! Before she could protest he fired and her tower collapsed. Oh that was it.
She pulled herself to her feet and brushed sand off of her sun dress. "You broked it!" She scolded the little boy and put her hands out to shove him.

Aaron stumbled backwards in a sort of crab walk from the girl towering over him, slightly confused at her anger. She was supposed to play back!
When she shoved him, he heard a crunch and sadly pulled the remnants of his catapult out from under his elbow.
So much for playing.

Ha! That would show him. He destroyed her village and she'd wrecked his catapult. Now they were even. Her complex toddler mind seemed to equate the two events. She hunkered down to his level and began making new piles of sand. Perhaps he would like to play with her nicely now. "Hi!"

He stared at the dog-eared girl in the best look of utter disbelief he could muster up. She was nuts! Sitting here building more buildings for him to knock down, finally, playing like she should, AFTER she'd made him smush his catapult!
This girl clearly was not getting it.
With a glance first over at David, who was sitting on a park bench several yards away still babbling furiously about something, he gave the girl a suspicious look, then began piling up his own sand, using the broken sticks of his catapult as supports. He was going to show her how it was supposed to be done.

Ah, that was much better, he was finally playing properly. No breaking things or knocking them over. She carefully built a wall around her buildings this time just in case- she would not be caught unawares again!
She grabbed a rock and examined it closely. It was very pretty. She held it out to the strange boy in a peacemaking gesture. Perhaps he could decorate his...building?...with it.

Not recognizing the intent behind the gift, Aaron took the rock with only a cursory glance and stuck it in the pocket of his baggy pants as he stood to continue building his tower. It was getting even taller than he was, and his taloned toes dug into the sand as he strained to pat flat the layer of sand on the top. Sand rained down from his feathered arms over Shay's head.

Shay shrugged her shoulders when he put her gift in his pocket. Maybe he had a mud city at home he needed to decorate, she could relate to that. She had a complex fort set up in her very small bedroom, a combination of cardboard, building blocks and an assortment of stolen cookware.
She did not appreciate the sand getting in her hair. It would mean a bath when she got home. Anna had an unreasonable grudge against dirt Shayleigh felt. She scowled and shook her head to try and get sand out of it. The shook loose from her hair...right into her eyes. The puppy girl's eyes began to water.

Aaron placed a small tee-pee'd bundle of sticks at the very top carefully. Pulling his hands away quickly, he breathed a sigh of relief when the tower stayed put. Reminded somewhat of one of his favourite games, Jenga, he smiled. Time for the finishing touch. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the stone, admiring it for the first time. It really would be a perfect topper. Waving his hand impatiently in front of the puppy-girl'd face to get her attention, he waited, stone in hand.

Shayleigh glared at the boy through her tears. "Meany!" She stuck her tongue out, but her attention was diverted when he pulled out her rock. Ah, so he was going to use it after all. He had good taste, or at least enough for her to forgive him for getting sand in her eyes. "I help!" She grabbed at the stone and in the process tripped over her own feet falling right into the carefully built tower. Ooops.

Before Aaron could even process the tears streaming down the girl's face, he was seeing the tower shudder then begin to collapse in upon itself. He froze and stumbled backwards, shaking his head, before tripping to the ground and covering his head, the stone clutched in his sweating hand. A whining sound is all that came from his curled up body.

Shayleigh closed her eyes tight this time, she had learned her lesson about sand and her hands were stretch out in front of her to avoid scraping her nose in the rough dirt. She was definately going to need a bath, she snuck a glance at Anna who was still sitting. Her guardian looked shocked but had not made a move to help.
The toddler turned her attention to the stranger boy. Uh-oh. Was he hurt? She crawled over and gently shook his shoulder. "You broked too?"

The girl's hair was tickling Aaron's face. He scrunched up his pointed nose and cracked open one eye. Behind the girl was a harmless pile of sand. Afraid of sand! Aaron scrunched his mouth up as well. How dumb! The sweat cooled on his exposed skin and he uncurled himself, revealing the stone that he had been about to place atop the tower epic-ly. Was he broked? Yes, that would make a good cover for his silliness! Frowning, he pointed at his foot as he curled his toes under and nodded at her sadly.

Oh poor boy. She flopped down in the sand beside him. She stretched out a hand and gently patted his shoulder, "Kiss it better?" Her voice was full of concern. Her offer was similar to one Gam had given to her when she'd fallen out of her chair when he'd been babysitting. She'd bumped her head and his kiss had made it feel better.
