People in my class were horribly confused by Ron Paul's voting record and the Libertarian Party philosophy in general. I'm going to do a presentation to inform them. Thing is, I'm more moderate, not actually a member of the Libertarian Party. I'm looking for input from capital 'L' Libertarians on major points I should cover so I can more accurately depict the party's views. Help me out?

It's not actually something I have to do for a grade--I volunteered when I realized that people seemed confused by the novel concept of not forcing their views on other people through the law. I already know enough that I think I'll be educating the (socialist) teacher, but still accuracy is important. I intend it to be sort of an introduction to the Libertarian Party philosophy. Any input would be appreciated. mrgreen

(I'm planning on having them take the World's Smallest Political Quiz, and probably taking look at the LP website...)

Hmmm... well I suppose I could give you a few talking points. For example, immigration. The libertarian party supports open, but secure borders, meaning that everyone who wants to enter the country leagally can, and those who don't can't. The ideal libertarin party immigration plan would call for three points.

1: Crimminal background check. (Making sure we aren't letting murderes or anything like that into the country.)

2: Health check. (Make sure we aren't letting dangerous disieses into the country.)

3: Employability. (Does this individual have a good chance of getting a job?)

If they meet these requirements, then its 1, 2, 3, Welcome to the land of the free. They'll be 100% leagal immigrants.

On forieghn policy, non intervention is the standard the Lp has adpoted. An example would be Kenya, which has exploded into violence since their disputed election. That is a dispute between Kenyan factions, and American troops have no business playing "Peacekeeper." Our non-response to Kenya thus far is the perfect example of not getting involved in other peoples conflicts. America is doing exactly what its supposed to do in Kenay, nothing. The re-elected president and the opposition leader are negotating, and the problem is resolving itself, without Americans standing in between to groups that want to shoot each other.

I think most of the other issues are rather clear cut in the lp homepage, (www.lp.org). These are the ones that I thought you might need some clarification on.

Hmmm... I think I should further clarify my comments on immigration. The Lp does NOT support amnesty for illeagal immigrants, we suport reforming immigration laws. Also, my 1, 2, 3 plan is an example, not the official party position. The Lp does support open and secure borders, but the plan I outlined was an example of how it might work. Sorry if I caused you any confusion.
