I'm sure this has been done before, so I won't go into a lengthy explination as to what it is.
For my AP English class, my partner and I are debating against Public Prayer in Public schools. This includes over the intercom, at football games and gratuations. Personally, I don't think there is much wrong with it, but I'm not here to debate with you. I want your opinions as students/teachers/parents. What do you think?

I think public schools should refrain from advocating religion period. they need not head prayers of any kind. if a kid wants to pray, then that's fine.. he or she can do so, that's their own personal choice. they have the freedom to practice their own personal religion. but no public school or teacher should direct students to do so. even if they say it's not mandatory to pray it's still not the schools place, especially given that it's a government institution. the only places prayer and worship should be advocated and/or directed should be houses of worship and one's own home.

I personally have a great dislike of it because in mine we spend a minute on it every morning what makes it worse it's God/Christian based which already starts my day off on a pissy note, I say like Calypsophia said they shouldn't have it announced in school religion should only be in a place of worship/home

if you go to a public school (and are in the USA) then it's against the US Constitution. if you go to a religious school then prayer is pretty much expected.

Well, I'm home schooled.
But I do think its not a wise decision to have public prayer at schools.
A lot of parents/kids/teachers now these days just don't believe, so its just a waste of time. But if kids want to know about god and such they should at least have bibles at schools.

I agree with about everyone else so far, prayer in schools is wrong. I mean, what happened to separation of church and state, schools definitely falls into the state category.

perhaps on the school library shelf along with all the other school library books (but if they carry a bible, then they should also carry volumes of all the other religious texts out there like the Quran for instance), but again, there are churches EVERYwhere, and that's what they're for.. learning about god. it's not for the schools to get into.

Well, I can't really say a lot, as I'm from Britain where schools take a different approach to religion. I am, however, led to understand that the teaching of Religion is banned in America, wheras here 'Religion Education' is a fully fledged subject - and at lower school we prayed every day in assembly.

Well, so no one here is for it? Wow... Well, at least it helps me some to hear your opinions!
Now, let's ask another question while we're on the subject. No doubt, the opposing team will bring up that if we have religion in schools, it would stop violence.
What do you think?

I highly doubt it, I think that having religion in schools would probably start more violence due to the fact that most current large religions dislike eachother

considering wars have been (and still are) fought in the name of god and religion, I honestly dont think so.

As a recent University graduate (just so you can kinda get my age in mind) I'm all for prayer in school. The so called separation of Church and State doesn't mean that it's wrong to pray in public schools. It means that the State will not dictate what religion we are to fallow. Freedom of religion. And, in my opinion, denying someone the right to pray in public school is denying their freedom. And the schools have no problem teaching evolution and global warming. (which I believe are both religions. That could create quite the debate there. But it wasn't too long ago that we were heading towards an Ice Age, which I was taught in school. And once we thought the world was flat and the sun traveled around us.) In short, praying is cool, even if you pray and worship a different God then I do.

Now, about violence, I don't really think so. We will be who we will be. We can't change people, only they can change themselves. In short, if they want to be violent, we can only do so much to change it. So forcing prayer on them wont help. But if they wanted to change prayer would be perfect, because God has the power to help us make weaknesses into strengths.

Disallowing school led prayer doesn't prevent one's freedom to pray in school, it just prevents the imposition of a religious view upon the students. That's why a lot of schools have to provide space for Muslim students to pray throughout the day (at least they did in Canadian Universities and appear to do so in British ones as well). The problem with the US is the whole constitutional separation of church and state which makes this such a highly debated topic — ban one thing and you'll guarantee extreme opposition from both sides of the line. In conclusion, I don't think that school led prayer should be allowed

As for violence, education can help prevent violence with or without religion. Violence is the result of a much greater societal, familial and educational problem and, despite religion's belief in miracles, it will not just miraculously get rid of violence. Religion isn't a band-aid that can mend something that needs surgery.

as I said in my initial post, if a kid wants to pray, then that's fine.. it's his or her choice. if they want to say a prayer before eating lunch or at the beginning of the school day there is no problem with that. *that* is what "freedom of religion" means. it doesnt mean that the school can lead their students in prayer of any kind. it's not the schools *place* to do so. prayer isnt their responsibility, education is. they're not ministers, nor are they the childrens parents. they are the only authorities (with the obvious exception of religious schools like catholic schools for example) that should be allowed to dictate when one prays, how one prays, or that they pray at all.

Hmmm, I dunno. Seeing as it's a public school I think they shouldn't pray publicly since PSs are places for all religion. I think only private schools shoudl pray.
