I'm going to cross post here with list of my favorite metas.

In psychology, Metacognition marks one's self-awareness. Metacognition is simply having an awareness of or a thought about one's thoughts.

In D&D Metagaming ruins the game for everyone and, according to some DMs is punishable by loss of experience points.

In Philosophy Metaphysics has both baffled and frustrated many students of philosophy. I, no less than others, have been frustrated by Metaphysics due to my inability to ever get into a dang Metaphysics class. stupid SJLA exclusivists!

In Magic: The Gathering, the Metagame is an important aspect of competitive play. The metagame is simply a breakdown of popular decks or deck archetypes in a certain format. Knowing what your metagame is (or what people in your area tend to be playing) can help you tweak your deck with card choices, both maindeck and sideboard which will be more effective against popular decks in your Metagame.

In Literature a Metaphor is a "figure of speech in which a name or descriptive word or phrase is transferred to an object or action different from, but analogous to, that to which it is literally applicable" (Thank you OED I couldn't have said it better). A metaphor takes the meaning of an object or phrase and transfers it to something outside of itself.

In human Biology Metabolism is the process of ingesting, extracting nutrients from, and disposing of food. I'm sure there are plenty in this guild who can explain the process better than I though.

In Writing Metanarration is a text or part of a text with deals with the nature of storytelling, narratives, or narrative structure. (example, an essay on narrative voice)

A Metaorganism can be discussed as either a phantasmal body existing parallel to oneself or a social body formed by the gathering of a number of of organisms.

Metamorphosis can be the changing of one object into another, the title of a work by Ovid, the title of a work by Franz Kafka, and the process of Spaceball 1 becoming Megamaid

OED defines Metapsychology better than I could myself as, "The study of questions concerning the ultimate nature of the mind and its functions which lie beyond the scope of experimental psychology; (Psychoanal.) speculative inquiry into the nature of the fundamental processes and states which underlie human psychology (e.g. in Freud's concepts of the ego, superego, and id); any particular theory concerning these phenomena."

Metallurgy is the science or study of metals: making alloys, smelting and shaping metals for various uses.

Those are my favorites.

I think appreciation threads are an interesting creation. I think it's always interesting to see who else likes what you like. Spurs much discussion too. And of course, discussion is what makes these threads work.

And power-hungry Slytherin loved those of great ambition...|>

---|Burger: That was an impressive and interesting list. I love metaphysics too, even though I really didn't study it much at school. Also, I like metalanguage - the critical literacy terms we used in English in high school.

CJM: And people who don't know anything about the subject of the appreciation thread are inspired to find out more about it.

Thanks. Sometimes I get on these kicks and spew random information all over everyone. I'm always afraid I come off as pedantic when I do, but I believe that information should be free and readily available. I guess that's why I plan to teach.

So are you saying that, boom, you think about it then you write what you feel?

Sort of. More like I write what I was just thinking about though.
