AL ASAD AIR BASE, Iraq (Reuters) - President George W. Bush said on Monday his top officials in Iraq had told him the present level of security could be maintained with fewer forces if what he called current successes continued.

Bush raised the prospect of a troop drawdown during a visit to a desert air base in restive Anbar province in western Iraq, where he said violence had declined after local Sunni Arab tribal leaders had turned against al Qaeda militants there.

The president flew to Iraq with his security team to meet with U.S. commander General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker for a final review of the war before a showdown in Congress over troop levels.

"General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker tell me if the kind of success we are seeing continues, it will be possible to maintain the same level of security with fewer American forces," Bush said.

If we dont need as many troop s there any more I think we should use the extras to secure the border from millitant's crossing from syria and Iran.

Why can't we let them just go home?

If we have the extra troops there it would make more sense to use them to secure the borders first befor they go home or the syrians and Iranians will just keep on sending more insurgent's

bear in mind that any numbers submitted for public information don't include private security contracts awarded by the US government to private sector firms (a.k.a. mercenaries).

Everybody is so wrapped up in the military aspect of it, but nobody has a bleeding clue as to how many private-contract forces are active in the area, outside of the government itself.

These are the guys taking care of all the dirty work the army and USMC can't undertake themselves, due to being bound by the ROE for the conflict. Their body counts, casualties, and missions aren't reported to the public, and they are only held accountable to the departments they have been contracted by.

Even if we were to completely eliminate the presence of US armed forces from the area, we could continue to have a military presence in the area for a decade or more.... at $100,000+ per man, per half-year, not including hardware and other expenses.

A troop reduction means nothing unless they start releasing the relevant data to the actual combatants on the US payroll, and not just the ones that are paid directly by good ol' Uncle Sam.
