(Yes, posting trouble is over!!)
True, but most people don't want to come out of their comfort zones.

Yes, it would be silly if that is what is doing. However, I doubt that he made a tactful statement saying that he encouraged English literacy, considering that his past history.

I think it's great that they want to hold on to their culture and heritage, but if your going to be living here, at least learn some of the language. I'm not saying they have to be completely fluent with no accent, but they should be able to communicate and hold a conversation.

I think everybody so far agrees with amune-ra's view upon the topic. True? My only concern is how Schwartzenegger suggusted that they learn English. It is probable that he said it in an offensive or crude way, which is the reason people are getting upset.

They can watch American TV, or we can force them to learn english by removing al the multi-lingual labels on food and everything else. But then ever manufacturer would get sued for discrimination.
NOTE--> To become an American citizen, the person must be able to speak, read, adn write english, They must also be able to recite the Pledge, along with a few other elementary-school level tests. Why thay can't just do the elementary tests? I;ve asked and never got a reply.

(sorry about not posting for awhile - read my rant in my journal for details.)
What comfort zones? America has always been "The Melting Pot", immigrants have been arriving consistantly since 1620's. (Before that they came less frequently and didn't typically stay). ... How would one family speaking another language interfere with your comfort zone? You live in an English-speaking country surrounded by English-speaking people. One, or even one hundred people, is not going to alienate you from your country, like the immigrants have to.
