I don't know if this happens to many other people, but I've been getting blisters on the first two fingers of my right hand every time I play. It never used to happen, it only started recently after I went away for two weeks (About a month ago) and couldn't play bass until I got back. Now every time I play I get blisters and can't play again until they've healed up, and then they just come back again! I miss my tough-skinned fingers.
Please, somebody say they know how to sort this out! gonk
3hours a day solves your woos fingers maybe you need to pick up the guitar if the bass ish too tuff for ya'.
That's treason!

ha this is the think play with the blisters if you like to play a little pain never stopped me i've lost my voice three times during shows and practice, also i've gotten some serious blisters i just kept playing, if it really bothers you switch to a pick or slap for a while and let your fingers coold down a bit. your strings might be a problem though, they could be worn out and rough you might want to think about new ones some time.

That sounds pretty good to me... I've been playing a little more often recently, and I haven't gotten a blister in some time... Though my fingers aren't even callused... Like I was playing for roughly four hours today and no blisters... Yay... domokun

you won't notice if your fingers are callused because finger tips are prity numb any ways and you can still feel stuff. its not a huge difference you just know that they are there when you have them.

If you're practicing, I suggest doing as said above and just taking breaks. But if you have a gig or performance, put a small layer of superglue over your finger.

The superglue idea sounds pretty awesome.

Theres something thats been bothering me.. I get blisters, but they feel like really deep inside the actual finger. I mean I can feel them when I play and if I poke my finger it feels just like when you poke a blister, but it's just not on the surface.

Is this normal?

Blisters are a common problem for instrumentalists, because its just like digging a hole with a shovel, or climbing on monkey bars. It irritates and damages tissue under the skin. If you have strong callouses, you wont have this problem before. I have gotten plenty of blisters over the long time I have been playing bass, and it usually stops coming back after a certain point.

If the blister is big, and the super glue idea wont work, try lancing it. Might sound like a bad idea, but the skin above the blister has no nerves, and there is a solid layer of fluid underneath. As long as the old layer of skin stays on and there is no pressure from the fluid, it wont hurt.

Just dip a sewing needle, or any small sized needle, into rubbing alcohol. This will disinfect it, and prevent infections. then just slowly work it into one side of the blister, then do one more on the other side to allow the pressure to settle out. Then just slowly press all the fluid out, and you should feel much better. From then on just put some neosporin on the blister with a bandaid to help rebuild the skin underneath faster. If you still need to play, play with the bandaid if you can. I have seen tons of bassists do that.

Credit to my mum for knowing that much about blisters razz

Wouldnt the top layer of skin rub against the new layer underneath without the fluid to keep them apart?

Never gave me a problem. The pressure of the fluid hurt much more.

Arr, bass is pain!
I am incapable of growing calauses, I have remarkably soft hands. I never get blisters though... keep playing, someday they'll turn into callouses. Or start using a pick.

My first bass teacher told me the tale of how one of his friend's large callouses fell off soon before a gig, and so he superglued it back on. eek
