Grip of Death

PostPosted: Fri Sep 08, 2006 2:20 pm

Hello all. There comes a time when, late in highschool, every person gets encouraged to sign up for the military. The pressure from military recruitors at school, over the phone, and various mailings emphasize certain attractive aspects of this decision. However, you are not being fully informed about the range of consequences of your decision. Recruitors are not designed to educate you, they are designed to recruit you.

Make an informed decision. Check out the "resist or serve" video here.

http://www.aclu.org/standup/freedomfiles/index.html

At least, if you join the military even after watching the video, you are a more informed, therefore more content individual for making your decision.

ALCU.org is a wonderful place to be informed about political rights and issues pertinent to you. The ALCU ALSO supports reproductive rights.

Also, while this site carries an anti-military bias, it demonstrates alternatives to joining the Military for those interested in getting an education instead (but were fooled into thinking the Military would pay up for that). http://www.objector.org/before-you-enlist/alternatives.html

Also, anyone who has had experiences in the Military are more than welcome to clear up any inaccuracies presented, as well as describe practical skills for thriving in that occupation. Your experiences are welcome.

edit= I had to change the topic title because I saw too much bias in it. The aim here is not to offend, but it is to inform, and get people to think, share, discuss the Military as a lifestyle and career option and that people have access to the info that will empower them to make decisions as opposed to being pressured. I have left the original content in the first post here because it helps fit in the context that Yi Min went by.

1. Money For College

Montgomery GI Bill really does help people in the military get a college education. There are things you need to do to use your bill. Of course, you have to give them more than just 1,200 dollars, you need to serve full time which can be from 2 to 6 years, depending on the branch. You also need to know how to use it. Many of the soldiers and troops that I know go part-time. They can also earn college credit from certian certification classes that they must take or are offered. For example, My husband is in Security Forces, he has taken many classes and tests that have to do with his job. Currently, he has earned 33 credits from these classes alone. And guess what? They were FREE!

There are even Education Offices on military installations that allow you to choose from different distance education Colleges that are accredited.

Example, The University of Maryland and the University of Pheonix.

My father and myself have both attended the University of Maryland. It is extremely flexible and makes it easy for you to do your school work and balance work. They assign all of your work at the beginning of the week and ask for it at the end. While attending UM, I met SEVERAL military members who were even able to take these classes from Deployements and overseas areas.

Quote:
With Active Duty, you commit to full-time duty (usually for four years but there are also 2, 3 and 6-year programs) with one branch of the military. While serving, you can qualify for college money by contributing $100 per month for 12 months ($1,200 total) through payroll deduction. You are then eligible for $536 a month for 36 months for a total of $19,296! (four year program) You can use this money as a part-time student while serving, or as a full-time student when your duty is completed.

2. Graduate Statistics
I cannot find new statistics at this moment but I will continue to look. The source used for the "2 out of 3" have gotten a four year degree is from 1991.

I find it hard to believe that 15 YEARS after the source was written that there are still not very many people earning their degrees.

3. Homeless Vets
The VA has programs to assist Homeless Vets. However, you can only help a person so much, before they need to begin helping themselves or using these programs to help themselves. Anyway, these people are not ignored like the video suggests.

Two Examples of VA programs:
HEALTH CARE FOR HOMELESS VETERANS PROGRAMS (HCHV)
Quote:
operates at 135 sites, where extensive outreach, physical and psychiatric health exams, supported housing programs, Drop-In-Centers, compensated work therapy, treatment, referrals, and ongoing case management are provided to homeless veterans with mental health problems, including substance abuse.

DOMICILIARY CARE FOR HOMELESS VETERANS PROGRAM (DCHV)
Quote:
provides medical care and rehabilitation in a residential setting on VA medical center grounds to eligible ambulatory veterans disabled by medical or psychiatric disorders, injury or age and who do not need hospitalization or nursing home care.

5. Getting Out of the Military

I am not sure about other branches but in the Air Force their is an option of leaving after Zero Week of Basic Training. You can just leave. I'll have to talk more to my husband about this as I am not sure exactly what the rule/law or whatever is called.

However after that amount of time:
Joining the military means signing a legal contract. If you break this contract of service, then you must expect to be punished.

6. Racial Statistics

Now, I know that the statists shown about rank; Non-Com Officer, Officers and so forth looked pretty bad concerning race. But what they did not show you is that there are different numbers of each race that are in the military, so the more of one race there is in the military, the more likely it will be that this race will have more officers and enlisted members. It has nothing to do with being white or black. It has everything to do with who enlists.

The 27 years demographics show the fluctations of different races that have joined the military. Including Enlisted and Officers. Please also see the chart Demographics of September 2005. (link below)

Military Demographics Fact Sheets

7. Homosexuals and the "Don't ask Don't Tell" Policy.

I consider this an extremely outdated law. I will not defend this law at all. I will also say that I know of MANY homosexuals and bisexuals in the military and they get just as much respect as everyone else. I have yet to hear one of my gay friends complain about unequal treatment. But, I will not doubt that it is there.

8. JROTC and Public Schools

I do not know much about this. But, I will return on the subject.

9. Information Given to the Military

You have a choice to opt out of this. That means you are able to go to your school administraition and fill a paper out stating that you do not want your information given out. It's illegal for schools to not have this opt out. They even say this in the Video, so I really don't see how this could be a problem.

10. Women and Sexual Harassment in the Military

The military does have a Sexual Harassment Policy. Women (and men) are able to report Sexual Harassment and abuse to their superiors or even higher than their superiors if it must come to it. There is a Zero tolerance policy to such things.

11. Individual Ready Reserve

IRR

12. Skills for the Civilian World

Depending on the job you have in the military, you will recieve job skills for the Civilian World. MOST jobs do have skills that can be shared with the civilian world and will make you more likely to be hired. It highly depends on YOU and your job.

-- I guess that this is it for now --
My best advice is to talk to actual Military Members. Ask them what they believe to be Pros and Cons of the military and ask why. If you do decided to join the military, make sure your contract has EVERYTHING you want in it. Don't just sign without reading. And Explore ALL options.

Yi Min, I loved your post! It's really in depth, and I'm sure it will be of much help and use for those who are interested in pursuing the Military as a lifestyle and occupation. Thank you for taking your time to challenge and confront inconsistancies shown in the video.

I hope that more people who have participated in the Military can come and visit this thread and share their advice and experiences to those who are considering the Military as an option after highschool.

My pleasure. I believe people should hear both sides of the story and do their own research as well. 3nodding
