First off, let me say this aimed at people who like Gilbert and Sullivan or know the Mikado well or have seen it. Just letting you know.
Anyway. As I mentioned before, I'm playing Katisha in a summer camp production of Gilbert and Sullivan scenes (it's a revue). Now, I was under the impression that Koko marries Katisha and does the whole tit-willoe shpeel because...he likes her. It kind of makes sense.
But then my friend's dad told me that Koko is pretending the whole time and only marries Katisha so that he doesn't die. When I ask my dad, he says it could be either or both (yeah, thanks, Dad). When I look it up, all the plot summaries have different views. I can't figure whether my weird character is truly desired for by this other weird character, or if I'm a mere alternative to death. Honestly? I don't care which, I just want to know which one so it's not laying on my conciense anymore.
So, can you help me people? *clutches head in mock insanity*

From what I recall of the show when my mom and older sister were in it (Connecticut Gilbert and Sullivan Society, represent!):
In the show, the young prince Nanki-Poo, in disguise as a wandering minstrel, falls for Yum-Yum, the ward of Koko. Now, Koko intends to marry Yum-Yum himself, but runs into the complication that, since he's the royal executioner, he has to kill somebody eventually. So he and Nanki-Poo hatch a plot: Nanki-Poo gets to be married to Yum-Yum for a month, then Koko will execute him and marry Yum-Yum. The only hitch comes when its discovered that the wife of an executed man must be buried alive with him, according to the law. Since no one wants that, they all pretend that Nanki-Poo was executed, and even concoct the elaborate tale of the execution to tell the Mikado, unaware that Nanki-Poo is his son. Along with the Mikado is Katisha, engaged to the Prince (and the reason he had no qualms about dying after only a month's happiness). When she learns that Nanki-Poo was 'executed,' it's death for everyone involved, especially Koko. But Nanki-Poo has another plan: if Koko can make Katisha fall in love with him and marry him instead, then he can re-emerge as Prince and no one has to die. Thus, Koko sets about wooing Katisha with his Tit-Willow song. His ploy works, and all is happiness for everyone at the end.
(Granted there was a lot of stuff that happened involving the other characters, but that's the heart of the plot, really)

Me and my dad actually looked at the plot summary in his Great Big Book of G+S.
Which, of course, I forgot to use in the first place. hehe. sweatdrop
But, anyway, yeah, I feel better now. All is well. mrgreen

My good friend is actually playing Ko-Ko. He doesn't do anything particularly funny during that song, but there's some other stuff where if we take one look at one another afterward, we just cannot stop laughing. 'Tis much fun. rofl

I just finished my performance and am on such an adrenaline rush right now! IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!!!

I'm gonna be in Godspell for a theater camp
I'm the 3rd oldest in the camp and the other 2 older than me both have dyslexia, so something tells me I'll be Jesus or Judas
Either would be good
