As someone mentioned earlier, it would be good to follow some sort of plan. Many study bibles have reading plans in them. My current favorite has three tracks: one is introductory (about a chapter a day for two week stretches), one is a little bit of every book (a chapter a day for six months), and one is the entire bible (a chapter a day for three years). Also, many churches have devotional books with daily readings listed in them. Maybe someone at your church has a favorite.

I agree with those who discourage trying to read it from cover to cover. That's not the way it was supposed to be heard. It can bog you down in some places.

Blessings on your journey.

I had the same issue talk to your pastor and maybe you could try doing a beginners cource you learn HEAPS! and it reall helps I didn't know where to start so I read most of genisis but then in a cource it sugested going from John which is such an awesome read! It really blem my mind when I read for my self about Jesus turning water into wine and about being born again when he talked to nicodemus. I found it great because it shows you alot of what you hear about by word of mouth and it's cool because you can read it first hand +D

I was trying to read the Old Testement, but then I was told, after I was asking questions, that I should read the New Testement, excluding Revelation because there's a lot in there. But I had all ready read it.

One chapter in a book a day. If you want to get through Matthew, good for you. Just one chapter at a time and a time to think about it afterwards.

I think one of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke are easier than John) followed by Acts is a great way to start.

My wife and I took a bible study course last year called The Bible Timeline and the premise is that there is 14 books in the Bible that tell the story of Christian History and kind of set the stage from the beginning of time through the early church period and that all the other books fit in somewhere. If you understand where in the main story timeline the other books fit in, it is amazing how much MORE they mean (especially how all the prophets fit in with the story of the kingdom splitting and then being exiled and returning for the Old Testament, and how Paul's letters (and to some extent the other letters) fit in the storyline in Acts for the New Testament).

I think it's important to NOT ignore the Old Testament. There is a lot of symbolic foreshadowing in the Old Testament of things in the New Testament and if you're aware of what has happened in the Old Testament it makes much of what Jesus said and did even more meaningful!!
