▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ THE xxKATENA

The Katena. An ancient race, they were the first of the spirits strong enough to balance the world. Created by the beliefs of people and the souls of the departed, they became the first spiritual beings to exist among the populace of the living, stopping from souls from becoming tainted in the afterlife. So strong was their pull, their power, because of the humans they guarded, that none of the deceased could escape, always calling the lost spirits of the dead, adding to their own power. But power is a double edged sword. Such was the revelation to the Katena, that their power, although immense, was not strong enough to encompass the globe. Time had made more people, more people made more souls, and more souls was simply too many. The Katena slowly lost their hold on the spirits of the Human World. Not only that, but the Katena were creating a negative influence on the people of the realm of the living. And so, using their combined powers, they created a new realm in which they could reside. They appointed one of their own to stay in the World of the Living forever, one of the others coming every year to help guide the souls to this new realm. And with each new year, another of the Katena would take the place of the guide. With this cycle, they could amass every spirit they needed and add to their might at their leisure.

But humanity tried the Katena further. It spread, it multiplied. The souls were simply getting to be too much for the Katena to handle by themselves. Although reluctantly, they took some of the older souls in their created realm, and built them into an army. These people were called the Gotei. They were killers by job, but not necessarily by nature. The Katena kept their routine, one would stay while another joined the watcher for a year at a time before changing places with another of their brethren. Now they had the Gotei to help keep the humans under control. And for a long time, it remained this way, the Katena and their subordinates, the Gotei, keeping the humans culled, but things could not last like this forever.

Another breed of souls appeared. Not the hollows. Although uncommon, the Katena had definitely seen them, but such lesser beings were absorbed by the spiritual might the Katena possessed. These beings called themselves the Shinigami; gods of death that deemed the Katena greedy. They claimed the Katena would drive the humans to extinction and as a result, doom themselves and every soul they had saved. The Katena, in turn, asked what the Shinigami would do if they held the power of the Katena. It was a rhetorical question. They saw the "Shinigami", as they called themselves, as simple souls with fancier weapons. It wasn't until the first stone was cast that the Katena realized their mistake. These Shinigami were different. They possessed powers that only the Katena had known. War broke out and countless souls lost their life. However, the souls were often torn. The Shinigami already had superior power to normal souls, and abilities wholly like the Katena possessed, including the ability to absorb the souls of the deceased humans.

As the fight dragged on through the months, the Katena seemed to be on matched grounds. The Gotei, the army the Katena had raised, was no match for opponents on the scale of the people they served. Worse yet, the Shinigami made it quite obvious they could make normal souls into Shinigami. They always had more added to their ranks, no matter how many the Katena slayed. It was a long standing, immovable wall pitched against a never ending swarm of foes. The Katena decided that the only way to finally stop this invasion was to find the leader of it all. They found a name, of sorts. It was a title, a being called "The Soul King." He was claimed to be as old, if not older, than the Katena, and had created the Shinigami to oust the Katena before they ruined the world. But that's all the Katena could discover. Deciding the war wouldn't end, they decided to use their ace in the hole. Using their never before witnessed third release, the Katena began to devastate the Shinigami forces. The Shinigami couldn't fight back, there simply was no way to. This form, the form the Katena called Kochaku, was the ultimate fusion of soul and body, and they used it to terrifying effect. But this led to their downfall as well.

Within seven days time, the enemy Shinigami were down to thirteen fighters. They had been the captains of this rebellion, overseeing it, the Katena had learned. They captured the Captains with ease, demanding to know which was the Soul King or where he was, if he was not among them. It was a question, they should not have asked. When the Soul King presented himself, the fight was extremely one sided. He defeated the twelve before him and banished them. The war over, he declared his thirteen final compatriots the first Captains of the new Gotei, giving it the full name the Gotei Thirteen. He had picked them at first because they were the opposite the Katena in personality and had the least risk of becoming like them, and with the war won, he picked them again for their strength. And so the Katena were gone, wiped from history it seemed. The Soul King, although never seen again, has always invisibly led the Gotei Thirteen. That is, until now, the Celestial Yggdrasil unleashing the once sleeping Katena upon the world. Feeling cheated, lied to, deceived, and angered, they wish nothing but vengeance upon the Shinigami for taking their home from them, corrupted by the workings of their mind and their long slumber.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ THE xxGOTEI THIRTEEN

Formed by a being called the Soul King, the Gotei Thirteen were simply called the Shinigami at their birth. The Shinigami were taught by the Soul King, entrusted with his knowledge and power. They had the ability to make other Shinigami through training. They were given the might to absorb and use the lesser spirits that made up the main fighting force of their foes, the Katena. The Soul King had given them a mighty gift indeed, and all he asked in return was to make the Katena realize, either through words or force, that they would destroy the world, their source of strength, and consequently, themselves, if they kept on at the rate at which they farmed souls for power. They had become greedy, he warned the Shinigami, and needed to see that. And so they approached the Katena and warned them, but were met with a rhetorical question. Angering one of the messengers, he cast the first stone, revealing part of the might of the Shinigami. It escalated into an all out war almost overnight.

The Shinigami fought hard, but their soldiers were slowly being led away from their causes. Captained by thirteen people, the chosen of the Soul King, they never wavered from their original goal, even if their soldiers did. To the army the Shinigami kept creating, it was a war to overthrow oppression, to obtain the power of the Katena, but these captains of the ever growing force stayed true, simply trying to oust the Katena so they did not destroy the world. They received their orders from the Soul King and carried them out without question, handling these missions personally so that their troops could keep the Katena occupied. But a massive force that gains no footing can only hold out for so long. The Katena, whether they saw that there was nothing to be gained from wading through the ranks of the Shinigami forces that never seemed to end, or perhaps even more fearfully, grew bored of the fighting that had held their amusement, unleashed a sort of hell upon the Shinigami. Using something they called the Kochaku form, they demolished the ranks of the entire army in a week.

With only the thirteen captains captured and left, the Soul King made himself known and stepped onto the battlefield for the first time. He dominated the fight against the Katena and banished them with an unusual technique. It drained him severely, but saved his Thirteen captains. Declaring the war over, he used his remaining strength to quell the masses as he saw fit. Whether by execution or persuasion, peace settled over the Spiritual World that had been made by the Katena so long ago. Taking his Captains, he took the name of the Katena's fighting force, the Gotei, and renamed it the Gotei Thirteen, after the Katena's valiant and loyal fighting force and his own thirteen survivors. He named each one a Captain of this new organization, giving them a set of instructions. The first of which was to amass and entire force of Shinigami, and make more to help guide the souls of the earth to this realm. The numbers would help in battles to come as well as keep the human populace balanced. He then gave them instruction on what to do for promotions, should the Captains wish to retire or die in duty. According to these instructions, the Captains should choose someone with a personality opposite their own. This would help keep the balance of the organization, and decrease the chance of the young organization facing the same corruption the Katena faced. Then, after blessing each of the Captains with a thirteenth of his remaining power, the Soul King bid them farewell and promised to always watch over the Gotei Thirteen and make commands as he saw fit. He disappeared, never to be seen again, although his orders did come through from time to time.

With the help of the Soul King, the ever invisible, eternally present being that made this all possible, housing was created for the souls ferried through to the Spiritual World. The Gotei Thirteen became more organized. Each Captain chose a successor, and retired, remaining only as advisers to the ones that replaced them. With the guidance of their founders, the new Captains created Divisions, allowing each unit to move autonomously from each other. It increased their efficiency, their speed, and even their power. Slowly, as more people passed on the mantle, the Gotei Thirteen became more organized. Nearly a millennium later, the Gotei Thirteens Captains held a meeting. This meeting created Division specialties. After much debate on how to pick them, and who should get which one, it was settled. Although it took a year to do it, the conditions were set. Once the meeting was adjourned, the Captains strode forth, and made names for themselves. Although not legendary in status, they were the first in the long line of feared Captains devoted to a specific set of Divisions, forever creating the standards of the more infamous Divisions such as the Eleventh and Twelfth.

And so the years passed. Traditions were forgotten. The Katena were forgotten. It was as if the Shinigami were the only keepers of balance in the business of souls. Their history was locked away, sealed shut and kept secret. But things were peaceful. But recently, the Celestial Yggdrasil has been on the mind of a being that hasn't shown his face or made his presence known for an extremely long time. He worries for the humans, for his people, for the world. And he may just take a step out of his palace to examine it himself, if it turns out to be exactly what he thinks it is. The long forgotten history of the Shinigami on his mind, the Soul King is worried he may be counting the days until he must join the battlefield again to face the Katena once more.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ THE xxWHITE FIFTEEN

History not yet applied due to unavailability

Hollows, beings so named because they form from souls with holes in them, holes caused by regret, sadness, rage, greed, envy and any other assortment of negative feelings. They take days to form, but spiral in power much faster than many other beings in their first days of life. But rarely do hollows thrive for too long. They are often nipped at the bud before it can bloom and grow into a wild and hard to control weed. But this is why Arrancar, when they appear, are even more dangerous. They are so strong that few know how to handle them. While it is true that they are problems for Captain level Shinigami to handle most of the time, their sudden appearance can cost a large amount of lives. The one thing that has always proven useful though, is that hollows were always greedy. They would never work together, too busy fighting each other, even when they had become the powerful Arrancar.

But this all changed. Arrancar that had been strong enough, or smart enough, to elude or escape capture and outright battles with opponents they could never hope to defeat, slowly gained power. They reached a stage that no Hollow before them had obtained. And certain individuals in this upper echelon took notice as well. They realized they could think so clearly. True they were still hostile, but they could fight the urge to kill and devour. These first Arrancar were like a new race in the spiritual species. And someone, one of these changed Arrancar, capitalized on this moment. This person went around the world. Traveling leisurely, always avoiding Shinigami and weaker hollows. They placed letters that the others could see and gathered around this capitalist. They were the strongest in the world. Their founder called them the Shirojugotai, the White Fifteen. Chosen because white was the opposite color of the Shinigami's uniform, the uniform of those that had always tried to cut them down when they were weaker, the Jugotai quickly rose in terms of a military power.

The thing was, the group wasn't exactly sure of each other's identities. They used code names to keep each other out of harm. It worked too. For much of their earliest career, the members worked well with each other, if not wholly distrusting one another. But it was foolish to think they'd always remain the strongest. In several mission related scenarios, lives were lost and the others were taken down by successors who kept the tradition of code names. As it stands, they have a new objective in mind. They've been off the radar for a while. and with the new chaos brewing, they're making bigger moves. Their plan unknown to outsiders, they're strength hidden to their enemies, and their members only as recognizable as they wish themselves to be, they've become a force to be reckoned with despite their military disadvantage.
