So, I have been getting more and more into making space art as of late. I find it gives me the opportunity to play around with painting techniques, shapes, and lighting that I wouldn't use in any other settings in my work. About a year ago almost now I made one massive space painting that ended up being painted 24" x 36" that has sold relatively well. I decided it was probably time I make another one instead of making anime bitties.

I used Terragen to assist with the landscape / foreground portion and then massively played with and altered the lighting in Photoshop. At first it was a brutally dark scene but then I started wondering how hard it would be to make a nebula. After looking at massive quantities of space art and tutorials, I took a stab at it and made something rather colorful so I had fun messing with all the lighting again... sweatdrop

Anyways, here is Epsilon IV:

And here it is 1280x1024 sized. Please view this version too!

The actual image is 24" wide and 300 dpi. I do actually paint pretty sloppily so it's a good thing for the DPI. Here's some detail shots:

Any thoughts / comments would be very appreciated. I think I'll be doing a lot more of these in the future. heart

I bet thats what happens when God farts. hehe, "fart".

but anyways, no need to drag a brother down, good job, and well done. But personally I like pictures with things in them. like a dragon, or a robot, or maybe a robo dragon pooping through a basket-ball neet.

hehe, "fart".

I can't help but stare at this in awe. It's fantastic.
I find I have less and less critique to add...; b; art fags are so amazing.

Would the planets have any reflected light on them? The (what looks like) pure black is very, very distracting to me; There's a lot of pretty colors and then sharp black objects in the sky that don't look natural. For instance, from a book I borrowed from the library on color: "However, most areas deprived of light are closer to dark grey and in fact pure black is rarely found in nature...perhaps its strongest argument against its use is that the final result often looks more like a hole in the painting surface than part of the work." sweatdrop

Zenne, I'd say you have point in your statement but lighting doesn't work in the same fashion in outer space. I looked at, honestly, hundreds of Hubble photos from deep space and other galleries to understand how the lighting would work. I guess that's why I love doing space art, just everything in it is so surreal. And honestly, I feel the black adds to the spooky surrealness and deepness of the space, and dimension (other than being that's how I saw photos of other bodies being lighted the same way) sweatdrop

I thought about that and I started laying out a space colony on the surface, BUT, it took away from the other prettiness so I decided to leave it landscapish.

How did I miss this? Awesome stuff.

I normally disapprove of the use of Terragen, but in this case I'll make an exception. Seems like you actually used Terragen and then did work on top of that as opposed to just trying to pass off Terragen crepe as art.

I really dig the richness of the colors and all of that. I do sort of wish that this had somewhat more interesting subjects; You speak of surreal, why not apply this impressive array of techniques to some space-toasters and some kind of melting clock for example?

I mean... how to put it. Planets are boring, I'd like to see some nifty stuff floating about in crazy nebu-land.

It's because when you look at planets in space they are lightyears apart, so a slight change in angle and bam! no light from that source at all. Think about eclipses.

oh yeah and I really like the picture. It reminds me of a mousemat I used to have...I really liked that mousemat. mrgreen
