If a tornado was coming, would you go back for your animals to take them (wherever you go) with you?

We are having a tornado plagued day where I live (Tennessee) right now. There isn't much I can do for our horses but leave them outside with halters on (IDs attached to their halters and outside so they can run for it rather than being locked in a barn), and I feel awful about that, as well as our barn cats, who disappeared into the woods early this morning when the first cells came through.

But I have three dogs and a cat on this level of the house that I have no plans to leave when we head for the basement. My mom said they can't go with us down there because the dog that lives down there with her is dog-aggressive and is always kept away from them, but when the time comes I'm going to tell her to close the door to her room with the dog because I'm bringing the rest with me.

Two are young and will happily go down the stairs, and I can lock the cat in the bathroom down there as well, but I am most worried about our oldest dog with a bad front leg and bad hips...she is very heavy and I'll either have to carry her down with me or take some extra time to walk her down slowly.

Of course, I'll be taking my daughter down there first and leaving her with my mom before I go back up and bring the four-legged family members, but they would never leave any of us behind so I'm not going to leave them behind!

Sorry, this is sort of a rant since I didn't like hearing my mom say she would just leave our furry loved ones in a danger zone and save ourselves until we can come back and see if they were blown away. evil

Nothing pisses me off more than seeing people on tv reuniting with their pets after a hurricane or something and they go on about how their pets are their babies and like family. They just left them at home to deal with floods and tornadoes while they skip over to a shelter. You'd have to drag me out of my house kicking and screaming if I couldn't take them to safety. I'd rush into a burning house to pull them out if I had to. Don't sit there and tell me your pets are your family unless you actually mean it. mad

I wish I could tip your post on here!

I've never understood why they tell people they can't take their pets with them. I'd have to tell them either what you just said about dragging me out, or that they can't make me leave my own home if the animals must stay there. evil

I guess if it was obvious evacuation would be needed, I would leave early enough to make the trips to get all the furry family members someplace else, too. ninja

i can see why some shelters dont allow pets, but it would be nice if there was a place to take your animals. or if the shelter had an area for animals so long as they were in a cage of some sort.

i wouldnt leave my animals, and if i had to evacuate i wouldnt go to any shelter because i dont like people enough and i have the money to go out of state and get a hotel if i need to. ive never evacuated though and probably never will unless im forced to. usually we just get the edges of hurricanes, sometimes we get the actual storm but those are rare times and often they arent nearly as bad as the news would like us to believe. just stock up on water and you're good

They won't let you bring pets because apparently it's not more important to save those animals than to keep the few allergic people from sneezing. They just expect you to leave your pets at home and hope the animal rescue teams get there in time to save them.

depending on how severe the allergies are it may not be just sneezing. if i spend too much time with my rats i can hardly breathe because of how much mucus my body starts to produce. i cant have them sleep on the same room as me anymore

That still doesn't justify basically abandoning pets in a disaster. Like you said before, there should be a designated area specifically for animals to be kept that people with allergies can keep a distance from. It's a pretty simple solution. And there are cases where some people screw up traffic trying to return for their animals so that could be used as extra incentive for those people who only care if a human is at risk.

I'd run into a burning building to save my animals, if we had a tornado or a hurricane I'd pile them up in my car first before any human.
the fish too, they would all go with me.

Oh man.. I could not imagine leaving any of my pets behind, I'd even feel bad about the fish!

I was about 13-14 and I was home alone. Somehow I left a empty juice jug on the stove, since I forgot to turn it off. I was in my brothers room playing a game when the fire alarm went off, low and behold there was a foot high flame in the kitchen and smoke everywhere. First thing I did? I got all the animals out, and then dealt with the fire (Smushed it with a seat cushion).
House could've burned or I could hurt myself, but I made sure my dogs were out and safe before anything else. Oh and the fire didn't do any damage, it just stunk of burnt plastic for a week.
