Taking as deep a breath as she could, Aurore reached for the handle of her apartment room's door. The cold air from her walk had worn off and nervousness washed over once more. She was letting another demon into her home, into her life. She almost couldn't believe that she had become so desperate.
At her side, Athanase, comfortably nested inside of her bag, chuckled. Probably listening to either the thoughts of Chiet, the Wendigo inside of Aurore, or the thoughts of the woman, herself. Whichever the case may have been, a chill ran through her spine. Such a small creature, yet he was about to sound so... foreboding.
Then again, he was a demon imp.
The boy in the cemetery had said that Athanase didn't care what Aurore had to say to him... Was it the same case now that they had a pact? Now that there was a contract binding them? He seemed more relaxed now, but then again, he didn't have a physical body until merely a few minutes ago. With his face perpetually happy, he seemed a lot more lax, but it was hard to tell what could have been going through his mind. He certainly didn't seem to care about much at all.
Gathering up the courage that she would have to force one way or the other, Aurore finally opened the door to her large apartment, quickly jumping inside and re-locking the door behind her. She turned, back against the door as she allowed the bag to slowly descend to the floor.
Athanase took a few minutes to leave the comfort of the hand bag, but it didn't take him long to dash out, exploring whatever he could find in the larger-than-necessary rooms.
Aurore watched, keeping her distance from the path of the new demon as he explored his new home. Her eyes drifted from potential threats; things that could easily be knocked over or things where Atha could possibly get stuck. There was nothing too terribly dangerous, but there were definitely a few valuables that she wanted to move before he could have the chance to break them.
In her moment of thought, a crash from the kitchen tore Aurore from her thoughts. She panicked, quickly dashing for the room attached to the den; a lovely, well decorated cooking space. It was clean, aside from the broken glass and oozing, orange goop that was now covering the floor in front of the open fridge. The obvious sounds of rummaging was an indication that Athanase was perfectly fine and unharmed, but the woman couldn't help but feel a wave of disappointment wash over her; that was her favorite jar of jam...
Aurore grabbed one of her rolls of paper towels from under the counter before she noticed that the fridge had gone quiet.
Hopping over the spill, she peered inside the refrigerator to see Athanase nursing from a small, yellow bottle with a large, round base and a thin neck; a bottle of lemon juice. She watched as his demeanor had gone from excitable to calm as he reclined against the inner-side of the fridge. Everything else, aside from being pushed away or dropped, was untouched.
It seemed that he had a fondness for sour things, if not only lemons. Aurore could only guess that he didn't like anything else, given the rest of the items surrounding him weren't treated so kindly. He also didn't seem to be a fan of oranges or sweet things... if the mess on the floor was any indication.
Chiet, in the back of Aurore's mind, chuckled with what seemed to be delight as he watched with his owner's own eyes. He could tell that this new addition would be fun. So much fun.
Athanase... she "said," trying to project her thoughts to her new companion.
The imp cast a glance to his owner, still enjoying his tart snack. This was the first he had given her any heed since they met, though he still didn't seem to care either way.
"Do you like lemons, Atha? Is there anything else you like?"
He seemed to think for a moment before the grin on his face widened. Tossing the empty juice bottle aside, Athanase dug into the produce drawer, delighted to see a few lemons in there as well. Unceremoniously discarding the apples and oranges, he began to chew on the outer skins. His reply was short and quick, as he was more interested in his newly found meal, "Lemons and you."
Shock ran though Aurore's body, a hot flash of fear as Chiet began to cackle in her mind. For whatever reason, this response frightened her. It made sense, given that he chose her out of the many others that had been in that cemetery, but what exactly did this little imp mean?
Aurore quickly cleaned the mess that Athanase had made, pulling out the rest of the lemons (along with Atha) and lying them on the floor before closing the fridge. She was going to bed; she was tired and needed sleep.
Maybe things would be more clear in the morning.
