Things had been normal for awhile now. Sera kept herself busy with work and Lorena kept herself busy caring for the pet fish. She had discovered a love for living things and the idea of protecting something. What she didn't know was the idea of...

"Lorena, I need to go out for a bit. Would you like to come?" Sera asked as she appeared, stretching, in the doorway. Lorena's cloak was in her hand and when she saw it, the small girl smiled and ran towards her mother. "Where?"

"Just to pick up a few supplies on the edge of town. Thought you would like to get out for a bit." Sera didn't need to finish the sentence as Lorena was already sneaking out the door at a full run.

Skipping along smiling, the red head kept just before her mother as they came to the end of Aerr. She only had been out there a few times and with Sera in such a good mood, she knew that they would stay for a bit if she asked. But for now, she Lorena was too busy looking around at the difference between city and not. Only one thing stood out to her. "Mother..."

Turning over her shoulder, Lorena realized Sera was speaking to someone. She wouldn't answer a question now so exploring was the only choice. As quickly as she could, the hummingbird made a beeline towards a closed off fence and what lay behind.

The tall wall stood about ten foot high, build of rather high quality stone, and wrapped all the way around whatever it was that was beyond the walls, not easy to see until one reached the large, wrought iron gates that stood open for the time being. It was still daylight so the grave keeper was resting, knowing that during the day those that would steal and vandalize the place were far less likely to show up. After all there would be many more eyes during the day looking after things, those who came to this place to grieve, to visit and drop off flowers, or just because they were curious. Those people were the ones that were welcome.

Come sunset though the one that took care of the play would rouse himself, he would set to patrolling, and the two ways in would be closed, the gates chained shut to keep out the bad things that would dared to disturb those who were laid to rest within.

Aside from the normal people who would be found within the grounds, those who were here to visit the graves that Beald so carefully protected, was a young boy that was standing not to far away from a small house that was tucked away into the back corner of the grave yard. He was watching over things in a curious manner, watching people go about their lives, and on occasion he would lift a hand to scratch at the sleeve of his coat. It was a rule... if he were going to go outside he had to wear his headband and his coat, two things that helped in concealing what he really was from the prying eyes of those that didn't want him here. He was a bit to young to understand all of the details but he did understand that the outdoors were dangerous without his disguise. As such he would keep it on. Even if the sleeves made the feathers on his arms itch, even if the heavy material squished his wings, he promised his Papa he would wear his coat and if there was anything Beald didn't like it was people that didn't keep their word.

The boy shifted for a moment before he stepped forward, a little farther away from the house, and toward one of the older, unmarked graves, the ones he'd noticed during long periods of quiet observations were never visited. It seemed as though everyone had forgotten about them and the stone had long since worn down leaving their names and the dates a mystery... it was a sad thing, for the graves to stand there day in and day out, always alone, perhaps he should say something? Adelbert chewed on his lower lip in a thoughtful manner before walking over toward where they were. Surely it would be alright to go a little farther from the house then he normally did he thought to himself, wings twitching against the heavy material of his winter coat.

Was it just the idea of a wall or the age of it that entranced Lorena? Did it really matter? All the little girl knew was that she was suddenly extremely interested in knowing what that wall meant to keep in. For you see the girl had not yet understand that some barriers were meant to keep people and other creatures out. The idea of harming something wasn’t a notion Sera had thought important to her daughter at this time. Lorena was pure innocence and for now, it was going to stay as such.

Running her hand along the cold stone, Lorena walked along the length of the wall until a sound caught her attention. Looking up, she noticed a woman dressed in black crying. The girl gazed softly at the woman until a man appeared next to her. It was he who saw the small girl and gave a frown that could have left wrinkles. “Child go home to your mother. Do you find pleasure in staring at those in mourning?” He asked before disappearing after the woman.

This left a strange question in her head. “Mourning?” She mimicked the word as she looked for a meaning. Mommy had never used it before so in her life, this word meant nothing.

What better way than to find out?

Smiling as she accepted the thought, the little hummingbird turned from her wall at a run and slid in pasted the irongates. What she saw shocked her.

“What are all these rocks doing here?”

Adelbert turned from what he'd been during, trying his best to get a bit of moss cleared off of one of the older gravestones before he attention was called away from the task by a voice that seemed different from what he was used to. Turning to look over to find a girl standing there, one who was close to age, and a lot more upbeat then most of those who came to visit. The voices here were hushed, sad voices that belonged to those who had lost someone important to them. This girl didn't seem to fit that description, she didn't seem like a vandal or a thief either so... maybe she was lost? As the son of the Grave-keeper he supposed that it fell to him to see that she was alright, right?

Giving the cabin a glance he started forward toward her, giving a smile, "Hello." Adel greeted the girl quietly, never having run across a girl his age in this place before now, it seemed that this place was one that adults seemed to come to far more often then younger people, other then the teenagers that came here to cause mischief that was, "Are you lost?" He asked of her, wanting to help if needs be.

As he got closer he couldn't help but marvel at how this girl seemed to stand out from the rest of the graveyard, a lot more brightly colored, both her hair and her eyes, it was neat! Far different from the more subdued colors that came with this place, a lot of gray from the headstones and black from the mourning clothing that the visitors wore. She was a bit like a beacon in fact he thought to himself, taking a couple steps closer but seemed careful to remain out of arms reach, just in case.

Reaching out a small hand from under her cloak, Lorena touched the closest stone to her. It was moist and fragile under her delicate fingers. That strange green stuff, moss her mother had called it, seemed to cover the entire backside as well. Even stranger was that on the side she was facing, words were written into the crumbling stone.

Finding herself leaning over to try and understand what the faded text said, Lorena almost missed the soft voice calling to her.

Lifting her head up, the ruby hair of the hummingbird went from side to side as she tried to pin-point where the sound had come from. No one appeared to be giving her any attention as they stood over stones more ornate than the one she looked at. No one but a boy who appeared close to her own age.

“Oh! Hello.” Lorena chimed back with one of her angelic, innocent smiles. Standing up from the stone, she watched him move towards her and stop a few feet away. “Lost? No. Just looking.” The pure look on her face was a completely opposite to the darkness the grave yard held. She was a beacon for many different reasons. “I do hope that is alright. I have never seen so many different stones before. And with writing on them at that.” She added as if it was something brand new while looking back towards the crumbling rock. “Such a strange idea. Why would you spend all this time chipping away at a stone when it is just going to fade?”

Adelbert tilted his head to the side when the girl treated him to such a smile, giving a bit of a smile, "Oh, good." He murmured, glad to hear that she wasn't lost among the gravestones, sure that it might be scary for someone to be lost in a place like this. He watched as she turned to look at the headstones that she was near, asking if it were alright, "It should be, so long as your not here to cause any problems, my papa normally kicks the trouble makers out." He explained.

He blinked a couple times as she said that it was a strange idea, he shook his head, "Its a way of marking who is resting beneath it, its something the family does, so that they can find them more easily and as a memorial." He told the girl, giving a smile. He turned to look at the gravestones she was looking at, stepping forward so that he could brush some dust away from the headstone, "They do fade, there is a section of the graveyard that is filled with the faded stones, you can't even read them. Its quite sad but I have been leading flowers wreaths on them since they don't get any other visitors." It might seem a little strange but he didn't seem to quite realize that, he had been born in this place, took care of things here alongside his papa, and as such it was everyday life.

The boy paused, looking for a moment thoughtful, then turned to look over at the girl, "Oh... Um, I'm Adelbert." He said, recalling that he should be introducing himself since he was speaking with her in such a friendly manner.
