I pierced my right nostril with a sewing needle back in 2003/4. I never change the jewellery any more. Just a little sterling silver pin with an unknown blue gemstone.

I'm thinking of taking it out permanently. Is there anything I should know before taking it out for good?

Okay I removed it. The balled bit at the back of the pin was just toooo big to pull back through - like I said I hadn't changed the pin in a long time - maybe two years - so the piercing had closed in around the jewellery very tightly.
There was blood and pain, but it's now out! 3% hydrogen peroxide is a bad idea, isn't it? >_>;
*goes to make a saltwater bath for her poor lil nostril*
