It's not often that a third-round pick retires from the NFL in just his second season, but that's the story of Alabama running back Glen Coffee(notes), who announced Friday that he was leaving the game of football. Coffee explained his decision in a statement released through the team.
"This has been a tough decision for me to make, but at this time in my life I feel it is best for me that I move on from football. I appreciate what the 49ers, my teammates and coaches have done for me, and I wish them a blessed season and all the best in the future."
Coffee later told Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee the real reason behind his decision, a move that took everyone on the team by surprise.
"It was a struggle for a long time. Actually when I look back I feel I never should have entered the draft in the first place. Football was no longer my dream. I found Christ in college. It changed my views on everything. But I still was a football player because it was expected of me, it was something I did all my life. I was basically wasting the (49ers') time."
Coffee is the second 49ers player to have left training camp this week -- the team is trying to recoup part of the signing bonus given to 2008 first-round pick Kentwan Balmer(notes), who's currently AWOL after stretching a two-day leave given by the team.
I think he'll be back after his contract with the 49ers is up, or sooner..

As a fellow bama fan, i'm hope he does well in whatever he does, he was a great back in college, but not everything's about football, now i'm for religion and stuff, i don't go to church or anything like that, but that's good that he's going into the ministry and all, not many players go into that type of field, but hey he's got a good head on his shoulders and he'll do good, roll tide #38

It's kind of hard for me to understand his view, because I know that if I was ever given the chance to play in the NFL I would stay in as long as physically possible, but I can respect it. As of the question, Will he be back? I don't think so he sounds pretty serious but who knows he could leave and then realize that he does still love Football or that he can do both.

If it was me I would have waited till my football career has come to an end before leaving. There have been several greats who had long, successful careers before moving on to ministry, Reggie White, Randal Cunningham just to name a few. Plenty of time for ministry after football, heck he can start ministry in the locker room if he wants to get started. But if he has a higher calling, and feels he needs to do it now, more power too him. Football, high paying contracts and fame is a hard thing to walk away from.
In related news. The 49ers signed former Eagles RB Brian Westbrook to a 1 year deal today to fill the void left by Coffee. Westbrook was cut by the Eagles after an injury plagued season last year, and visited several teams before the 49ers signed him earlier this morning.

There was potential with Coffee, Many great players struggled their first season before breaking out, Vernon Davis just last season finally became the TE threat the 49ers were hoping he would be, and anyone remember Peyton Manning's first season? He had more INT than TD passes. Coffee may have been, "Average" at best, but there was potential for him emerging as Frank Gore's replacement and starting RB down the line.
