A "team war" is what Duelist Nexus calls a team duel between two teams within our ladder. These duels are fought differently than your normal game. For the following example, this will be a mock duel between Team Battle City and Team Acadia, both being fictional teams that do not exist.

Before the battle can begin, both teams agree upon a set number of players to represent themselves. In addition, each team is entitled to and agreed amount of extra players to be substitutes, but more on that detail later. Let's take a look at who's playing for each guild.

Guild Battle City

Joey Wheeler
Rebecca Hawkins
Leonhart von Schroeder
Mai Valintine
Rex Raptor
(sub) Seto Kaiba
(sub) Yugi Muto

Guild Acadia
Alexis Rhodes
Fonda Fontaine
Little Belowski
Professor Stein
Blair Flannigan
(sub) Judaen Yuki
(sub) Jesse Anderson

What an impressive line up from both teams! Starting from the top of the list, each team defends themselves with their own players. To kick things off for this team war, it's a match between Joey Wheeler and Alexis Rhodes. Look at me, I'm talking while the match is about to come to a conclusion.

Conclusion to Duel One
Joey - 6800 Life Points
Alexis - 350 Life Points

Joey: I play a spell card, Heavy Storm!

Alexis' Call of the Haunted is destroyed, taking White Night Dragon with it to the graveyard.

Joey: I summon Alligator Sword in attack mode and it attacks your Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands!

Alligator Sword - 1500 ATK
Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands - 1400 ATK

Alexis: Ugh! I can't take much more of this!

Alexis - 250 Life Points

Joey: AWRIGHT!! I'm da granfatha of duelin'! Red-Eyes Black Dragon, INFERNO FIRE BLAST!!

Alexis - 0 Life Points

And there we have it folks! Joey Wheeler delivers a crushing blow to Team Acadia by defeating Alexis Rhodes. This means that Joey is still the current player for Team Battle City, as he is yet to be beaten in a duel. Now the next duelist steps up and continues the war.

Oh wait? You guys can't find Miss Fontaine? That's right, she's away on a business trip at the moment. Well, the team war can't just end like this. So Team Acadia will have to pick one of their substitutes. From the look from up here, Jesse Anderson will take her place for this duel.

Conclusion to Duel Two
Jessie: Ya know Joey, you could at least try to summon a monster. Ruby 'ere has been clobberin' you the whole time.

Joey - 2600 Life Points
Jesse - 8000 Life Points

Joey: I play this spell card, Card Destruction! Hopefully I draw a monster now!

Both duelists discard their entire hands and draw new cards.

Joey: Awright! I summon my Baby Dragon to the field and whomp your little Carbuncle!

Crystal Beast Ruby Carbuncle - 300 ATK
Baby Dragon - 1200 ATK

Jesse - 7100 Life Points

Jesse: Well that was a mighty fine play there, Joey. Unfortunately for you, I special summon mah Rainbow Dragon. This kinda puts an end to this game.

Rainbow Dragon - 4000 ATK
Baby Dragon - 1200 ATK

Joey - 0 Life Points

Joey: W-what?! But I'm the granfatha of dueling..!

...ouch, sucks to be Joey right about now.

Oh? We have word that Miss Fontaine has returned from her trip. Jesse can now return to the side lines with the rest of his team and cheer her on. However, if she were still unable to play in the team war, he would have to continue in her place until he lost a game. Effectively eliminating both of them from the team war. That's right, once a substitute has been defeated, the player they're standing in for is unable to play any more.

So now that you know how the team war system works, it keeps going until one team has no more players available to them. That's how a team war works.
