Background: Bast didn't become an espada until recently. She formerly was a vasto lorde who had turned arrancar on her own. She was known as the Beast of the East until running into the primmera. After a long long battle, she lost and was taken to Las Noches to become the new Segunda.
How they became an Espada: She was defeated by the Primmera, and then killed the Segunda.

Why? She isn't a truly offensive type, and she lost before she could pull out all of her power.
