“Endless Knight"
Three months after the end of “The dark knight”
The movie opens with a security tape of The Joker(Daniel Day Lewis) being interviewed by an asylum employee, Harleen Quizel(Sherri Moon). The camera pans back, to show that the tape is being played in the middle of a crime scene. Several members of Arkham security are trying to piece together the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Joker, Jonathan Crane(Cillian Murphy), and Quinzel, who’s believed to be a hostage.
In Gotham, even under the harsh jurisdiction of new DA Roman Sionis(Billy Crudup), several villains have risen to try and fill the spot left by the Joker. One particular villain, known as The Riddler(Doug Jones) has become obsessed with finding out who Batman is. He’s already figured out the lie about Harvey Dent, but is still keeping this secret to himself. He’s become a thorn in Batman’s side, using various riddles to make the hero’s life difficult.
Unfortunately, every time most of the other criminals make a move, Batman is there once again to force them into hiding.
One criminal who's gone to great lengths to be unknown to the public is Catwoman(Zoe Saldana), who's been taking advantage of these circumstances. She’s been committing crimes across Gotham, leaving ingenius clues to make it look like the battered villains are responsible.
Her ruse is so convincing that every one of the villains she victimizes believes that Batman(Christian Bale) is the one framing them. Only Batman suspects foul play. His initial suspision is that Sionis is planting this evidence to get himself easier convictions. At a gala, he meets Selina Kyle, and his torn heart allows him to fall for her advances as he begins to feel a genuine affection towards the disingenuine woman. The two fall for each other, which becomes quite the tabloid spectacle.
Back on the scene, Joker- along with Scarecrow and Harley- gather together five of the frustrated villains. They are Victor Zsasz(JK Simmons), The Ventriloquist(Keith David), Anarky(Jessie Eisenberg), KGBeast(Mark Copani) and Black Mask. Joker explains that the Batman would never come after them in such a shady manner, and urges them to search elsewhere for the perpetrator.
A slip-up during a heist reveals Selina’s identity to the brood. After tricking Scarecrow into getting himself arrested, she uses the diversion as a chance to escape, but only barely. She flees to Wayne Manor, where- in search of protection- she breaks down, and confesses to Bruce Wayne. Instead of telling him the truth, she says that several bad people are after her, and won’t explain why.
A few nights later, Joker’s cronies attack Wayne Manor, without Joker. Harley is leading the attack. Out of costume, Bruce himself is forced to fend off the attackers, while Selina evades the villains, hiding in the shadows throughout the manor. Bruce incapacitates Anarky and The Hatter, and then loses sight of Zsasz and Black Mask while fighting Harley.
While hiding, Selina discovers the entrance to the batcave, and learns of Bruce’s secret.
While all of this is happening, we cut to The Riddler, who is interrogating Coleman Reese, who he’d secretly abducted that morning. Despite his claims to be a genius, Riddler’s completely stumped about Batman’s identity. Before he can get Reese to talk, Joker and Black Mask come upon the scene, taking Nygma by surprise. Joker claims that they have business to disuss.
After handing Anarky, Hatter, and Harley over to Gordon(Gary Oldman), Bruce mentions the disappearance of Zsasz and KGBeast. Gordon leaves, to search for them. No sooner is Bruce alone then he finds Zsasz in his mansion, looking freaked out and holding a knife to Alfred’s(Michael Caine) throat, threatening to kill him. Before Zsasz can follow through, he catches a dagger to the head, and is killed.
Selina, now in her Catwoman disguise, steps out of the shadows, training a gun on Bruce. Claiming he owes her, and that she saw Joker take his girlfriend as a prisoner, she disappears.
This false information cuts right through to his heart. He dons his own disguise, and leaves to search.
After a month of secretly working with Batman, Gordon and the police finally find a clue as to what really happened that night. In an abandoned building, they discover the bodies of Edward E. Nygma and Coleman Reese, shot dead by the Joker only a month ago. With this new information, Bruce figures out what he should have known all along- that Joker’s game all along was to stop The Riddler from revealing Batman’s identity. He’d set up the attack on Wayne Manor so that Batman would come to Bruce and Selina’s aid, distracting him from investigating Coleman’s disapearance.
In the final scene, it’s revealed to the audience that Catwoman and KGBeast are still at large. Now motivated almost entirely by his belief that Catwoman was telling him the truth about Selina, Batman is still running from the law, as he searches for the connection between Joker and Black Mask, the new head of the Falconi crime syndicate.
Thus setting us up for the fourth movie.
