Loookiiii

The simple word came to the wolf on the wind, in a soft sing-song sort of tone. She wondered briefly who was speaking to her, before fluffing her fur up and continuing onward. Maybe it was a trick of the wind, and maybe it was the seer who had visited earlier in the year. She wasn't much concerned with it as she was with her task at hand.

Wolves - and not just any wolves, but her family was out there, somewhere. They had been disappearing steadily, since Hige had gone with half the pack so long ago. The thought of the burly male sent a small chill down her spine, but not nearly as powerful a one as it had when they had been mates. She was slowly getting over him, and getting used to being a lone alpha of a dwindling pack.

Her little grandson had been accepted by the pack as a second alpha, and the female felt that he was insurance against anything that might happen to her. If she died suddenly, the pack now wouldn't go into a complete state of disarray, and there would be no fight over who was to be alpha. Castor would be free to select a mate and continue the pack as he saw fit - and Loki trusted him to keep things going in the best direction.

But the problem wasn't her trust for the beloved blood her daughter had produced, it was the fact that Castor had been missing for four suns now, and without a word as to where he was going. He had usually been good about telling her, she figured he felt a bit of responsibility to her and the pack now that he was to be standing alpha of it... but now, the elderly she-wolf was worried. Deathly worried.

Her course stayed straight, her pace steady. She would find the missing, and bring them home if that's what they wanted. She had also caught wind that she had family out in the woods that she didn't even know about - and hoped that she would run into them as well.

As her thoughts shifted from Castor, to Hannah, to others, she remembered the horror-stricken pup as she had finally returned home, without her sister Elayi. Loki had been just a grief stricken, if not guilty for letting them run off. Now she hoped that it wasn't too late to see her daughter again.

The wolf, once a rich mix of browns, was no more a mix of soft hues, mostly grey. Mostly, she hoped that anyone from South Seaside she met would remember her. That, and she prayed that no former enemies would find her this time. It had been ages since the she-wolf had left the protection of her pack, and especially without the protection of a younger, stronger wolf.

For all these things she prayed, though she kept her eyes wide and ears vigilant, for anything that might show itself this chilly morning.

So, going back to being a lone wolf was harder than she thought. But maybe it was better for the rest of the packs out there.

Now that Elayi had gotten her memory back, she was sure that she could break at any moment. Her past, her family, her sons, her mother...all of it was back to her. It was a lot to take in what, a week? And it hadn't come back in 'flashes' or 'bits and pieces' like she's heard some wolves say. No, it had come back all at once. Like she'd been upside down, and then quickly righted, all the memories rushing back to her head.

And now...she'd had to leave her pack behind. Tough she hadn't felt very attached to it, she's been there what, a month maybe? And now she could travel wherever she wanted. Everywhere and anywhere in the world.

Which she was carefully doing right now. Though asking around for her mother hadn't been so successful. Nobody knew who she was, or ever even heard of her. Strange- since she was an alpha. But, oh well. So what if Elayi had to run in a million different directions? Loki had to be somewhere. Right?

Her small pads thudded against the ground, the wolfess pcking up her speed. Throwing her head back, Elayi fearlessly (and she wasn't usually fearless) let rip a long howl. One that was full of longing, and need to be brought back together. One that called a single word.

"Mother!"

Hmmm... The wolf had been a spritely young adult when she and Hige had first come to these lands to create a family pack together, one that would take in anyone in need, a shelter and safe haven. The pack was still very much that, and she intended to keep it that way. Once she rounded everyone up, things could start anew, and the she-wolf was excited.

She fluffed herself up once more, the silvery strands in her coat and on her muzzle glinted in the coming dawn. The wolf was still deaf and blind on her left side, but the right side stayed ever strong, withstanding the test of time with a primal need to see and hear, when the other half had failed long ago during a mysterious illness.

She was not large, for a wolf. The only member of the pack now who rivaled her small stature was Hannah, and again she got to thinking about her missing daughter. Where there grandpups Loki didn't even know about? These were the things that half of her mind gnawed on as she passed through the Free Lands, careful to skirt any marked pack borders. She had always kept that belief strong her in heart as well - "Howl out to me from my pack border, but do not enter unless I am with you, or there is a dire need." - Johnny, Hannah's mate had such found that dire need, so long ago.

The elder smiled as she padded on, taking in the scents of the forest. It had been a calm journey up until now, when suddenly the female heard a howl ring out from around her. A single howl that seemed to be calling for a guardian, a mother. Loki's brows furrowed as she tentatively moved to a nearby ring of trees, and turned her back to them. When she felt she was protected from being taken by surprise, the elder let out her own howl, rich and seasoned with age. It spoke; "I am here."

She was taken aback that someone even answered her howl. And that the howl called back to her. It seemed to be close by, so she took off in that direction, smelling a pack border. The ever-cautious loner stopped at that border, smelling familiar scents. Was one of them her mother? It had been so long...but there still might be a chance.

Elayi let rip another howl, this one louder. More desperate.

"I've found you!"

The old wolf cocked her head a bit. She still wasn't sure what was going on, and hoped this wasn't some sort of trap. Loki stood tall, bringing her tail and head up like the proud alpha she was. If this wasn't a trap, maybe it was a lone wolf who needed family. The elder felt that it was a good idea to be on the lookout for anyone needing a pack, even if her sole reason for leaving the safety of South Seaside was to find the missing.

She waited patiently as the other wolf came into view finally. A lone, by the way she moved, but Loki knew instantly now. "Elayi, my heart." the wolf let her tail swish as she moved to greet her lost daughter, still being cautious as to what could happen. Loki loved her family, but Elayi had been gone for so long, there was no telling what had come of her mind, her intentions.

Her nose took in the scents that the daughter brought to the area, smelling pack, but also an unsure notion of pack. The she-wolf kept a respectable distance from the younger adult, but smiled welcomingly and warmly. She only needed confirmation that the wolf truly was in her presence as an act of benevolence.

Elayi wagged her tail in relief, ear pering up. Her mother hadn't changed much, except for her apperance. Her coat had greyed with age, the colors fading. But Loki wasn't old, not to Elayi. Just wise.

"Mother." She greeted, daring to take a few cautious steps forward. This was still Loki's territory, no matter what relationship they had, and she dare not look her mother in the eye. Elayi bowed her head a little, tail wagging so fast that she could barely walk straight without tipping over. It took her great concentration, one bad move and she would fall onto her side.

Apparently, Elayi wasn't as nimble as she used to be. She tipped over, onto the grass wet with dew. It soaked her pelt, though her tail was still wagging. It thudded hard against the ground, and Elayi raised her head to look at her mother. Legs sprawled out akwardly. She smiled goofily. "Mama."

Loki smiled fondly down at the fallen wolf. Elayi was still the puppy she had remembered so long ago, and still as innocent and loving as a young pup.

"My dear, where had you gone?" she found herself pining for the days long ago when puppies were bountiful in her life, and Hige was still her love.. her mate. A lot of time had passed now, and she still hadn't found another who could take the same place in her heart that he had.

But they had been young together, and maybe that was the problem. Loki sighed and shook her head slowly. She had a long line of extended family now, and she was happy. "It makes me gleeful to see you once again." She wouldn't say so, but she had feared for the longest time that Elayi had followed her father into the unknown, or worse, had died after running away.
