They are considered Post-Punk and one of the bands that developed the goth genre. Joy Division was one of the first bands to even be described as "gothic" in 1979.

On a side note, what would be a good place to start with listening to Joy Division's music? I listened to some of their stuff a while ago, but couldn't really get into it. Any particular album of their that stands out that I should give a try?

Well they really did not make too many albums. What with Ian Curtis killing himself so soon. However I always enjoyed Substance. Being a compilation makes it a good place to start.
