The pale shade of blue stood out against the shades of greens that surrounded him, but it matched the sky above. Calix rifled through the bag on the ground, pulling a clump of red berries out before sliding the strap over his head, it settled down along his shoulder. He glanced up, looking at the pair of herla just a few feet ahead of him, watching them with his one eye. He was eager for the trip ahead of them, traveling to a place his mother had forbidden him from going, and better yet he was going with... friends? That's what they were right? He shook his head, freeing himself from that thought, if they weren't friends then they probably wouldn't be here right now, at least that's what he figured and was content with.
A smile split his face, "just give me a minute to mash these, that way I can leave a trail to mark where we've gone," he murmured. "Though the sooner we leave, the less likely we are to get caught..."
The young hart shuffled slightly, his feathers ruffling as he tried to imagine the consequences of getting caught before having even left. He lifted the flap of the bag with his teeth before spilling most of the contents into the grass. It was more important to have room for the treasures, rather than for these colorful berries. Besides, he could always collect more, and maybe, just maybe, he would find some sort of exotic fruit he could paint with.
"Ready?"

Xiphi walked at a steady pace, so the yearling at her side could keep up. Her pale eyes fluttered lazily as the days adventure began to unfold. The possibilities haunted her thoughts.
What if their parents found out? Then I'd be in for it. But all those gorgeous gems waiting for me in the Dead City... it's got to be worth it. Besides... maybe some horrible beast will come and take these yearlings off my back... and then I'm off the hook... Yes, that would be ideal. But if the beast came after me...
Xiphi shook the pestering thoughts away as Calix's berry-mashing began. "You know, Calix..." She mentioned gently. "Your parents can just use that trail to find us quicker. Perhaps it would be best if we didn't leave a trail. My directional instincts are sharp, anyway. We won't get lost." A wicked grin flicked across her concealed face. Well... I won't get lost.
"I'm as ready as I'll ever be." Xiphi's nostrils flared with excitement as she gazed toward Kindle. "Are you ready?"

"Oh, she's right Cal," nodding towards Xiphi, "they might figure out where we've gone, and we don't want that." His eyes wide at the thought. "Hopefully we'll be back before they even notice we're gone."
Walking towards Xiphi, Kindle looked over his shoulder towards Calix. "I'm ready. Let's go!" He was wiggling with excitement.
He knew they could get in quite a lot of trouble from this, but DANGIT! he was bored and this would fix that. His dad always talked about the far off places he had been, even Suvius' birthplace sounded more interesting than the fluffy meadows here. Kindle loved his home, but it could be a little lame.
Turning to Xiphi to ask a question, Kindle paused in his walking. "Uh...do either of you know where we're going?" Looking between the two of them, he laughed at himself for not even knowing the direction of the Dead City. "Cause I don't!" Still giggling Kindle beamed at the both of them.

Calix blinked, staring at them as he mulled over the thought. "My mother wouldn't follow us, it'd require her to leave her comfort zone," he said with a snort, pawing at the ground with a hoof. "She won't notice I'm gone for awhile ... the only real problem for me is coming back without being dirty." He rolled his eyes slightly, muttering before he turned to Kindle, "Would your parents follow a trail I left?"
A tinkling laughter escaped him as he reared up slightly before trotting over to his companions. "Lets be off!" He chuckled, his bag rubbing and bouncing against his side as he moved, taking little hops ever couple of steps.
His ears swiveled as Kindle spoke, ah... that could be problematic..., he furrowed his brow and stopped walking. Had his mother ever told him where the Dead city was located? A small scowl appeared on his face, of course she hadn't, unless the location was hidden in the cautionary tales he'd been told.
"Sorry, I don't know either..." he sighed, glancing at Xiphi with a hopeful look on his face.

"Maybe it would be best to store the berries in case food gets scarce. But, it's up to you."
"Let's be off." Xiphi chuckled, swiftly stepping forward to direct the young herla. Suddenly, she struggled to remember why she was bringing them along. She gazed over her shoulder, eyes lingering on Kindle's smoking hooves. With a gentle hum of contemplation, the gray doe turned in the direction of the chilly breeze. There was moisture in the air, that's a good sign.
Xiphi's long tail swayed against the blades of grass as she shifted her train of thought onto something more enlightening. "I would suggest a race, but that wouldn't be fair. We all know who would win." She challenged the two yearlings with a toothy smirk, as her gait acquired a playful skip. On this hard, dry terrain, she was prone to losing. It didn't matter to her, as long as she could cloud their minds with a false sense of friendship.
