I debate this. I play a green snake deck, and if it gets right its nearly unstoppable. Takes 3 turns with a decent draw to get going.

Is it mono green?

How does it stop turn 1 swamp, random creature
turn 2 Swamp, dark ritual, persecute for green
(that's considering the black player gets the best draw he possibly can)
Anyway, I'm not talking the best in terms of power. That award would have to go to blue:

Ancestral Recall, Time Walk, Force of Will, Counterspell, Opposition, Gush, Brainstorm, Pact of Negation, Prosperity.

At first glance, blue looks interesting. Competitive blue, however, has no imagination. It's all Draw, go, Draw, go counter, draw, go, draw, go counter...and so on.

Black is versatile, powerful, creative (black has some of the most fun to play combo decks and some creative or at the very least fun to play non-combo decks.
Black and white are the only colors that can competitively support a both mono-colored aggro and mono-colored control decks. The difference is that mono-white aggro is only viable in certain formats. Black has more versatile staples. MBA is easily converted to MBC.

Surprisingly, I would say that Green and White are tied for second. I'm not a big fan of green, but green can do some pretty fun stuff.

Out of curiosity, was your green snake deck mostly kamigawa or was it older than that? There are so many good snakes in magic.

Its got artifacts but no other colors. Some people use mono differantly so I thought I'd specify.
It counters your set up with:
Turn 1 forrest, random creature, maybe attack (about a third of which will give me another mana next turn and many others have haste, a few have both) turn 2 forrest, random creature which buffs all snakes, if mana left buff creature(s) that can attack, next turn same, attack, rinse, token spam, recycle, repeat.
