User Image Jess wandered through the heart of the Mountain Road valley, too distracted to chase butterflies or climb trees. She was thinking, which she'd done a lot of lately.

Nobody in the pack could talk to ghosts. Except for Arbre, when he was asleep, and it always Nari, so that didn't count. What about all of the other ghosts? Who talked to them? Weren't they bored, or lonely? All the wonderful stories they had to tell, and nobody to tell them too. Or maybe they were all gone, and only Nari was left. It was possible, sure, although only Arbre could really know for sure and Jess had always sensed that it was somehow best not to talk to him about ghosts or Nari or the way he talked in his sleep sometimes and kicked his paws like he was running.

There was only one solution. She, Jess, would have to talk to the ghosts. But how can you talk to somebody who isn't really there?

Carter was having a bad day. Already having a strong vision in the beginning of the week, he was rocked by the possible events about to take place when one came out of the blue and paralyzed him. He'd been devouring strawberries, a rare treat that could placate his soul, when he saw them. The dead, speaking to the living through one vessel.

All in all, it wasn't as terrible as others he had seen, but the implications were enourmous. A ghost speaker, for their pack? Did that mean that one would be born, or possibly join them later on? And how long would that be? When he joined the others for important occasions, he could sense that they needed one, but he did not wish that on anyone. Important, yes, but there was a line between the living and the dead that one should never cross.

He sighed and hung his head, looking dejectedly at his white paw. Normally, this one was itching to rip the visions out of his skull, but at the moment it was as calm as its siblings. With the sun gleaming in through the mouth of his cave, he found it safe enough to venture out for a bit of fresh air. A walk was what he needed. Something physical to stave off the glimpse of a possible future.

But wasn't this one bound to be true? He'd seen her, Nari, for a second, but he knew it was her. In his soul, he knew it. Shaking his head, he walked on into the light.

Jess swatted at some flowers that were in her way and sat down. The dead, the dead. She would talk to them, and they would listen. But still... the dead, the dispersed, those that had moved on. She shivered as if a cloud had passed overhead, even though there were none in sight.

This is what I want, she told herself firmly, and this is what the pack needs. I won't be like Arbre. I won't run in my sleep. And Nari will leave him alone, then, when she has someone to talk to. It's only bad because she's lonely. And Arbre doesn't know how to let her go. I'll just chat to her now and then, and she'll be my bestest friend, my Great-Aunt. I've always wanted a Great-Aunt. Boys! There's nothing but boys in the family!

Shaking her head, Jess set off once more, determined not to run into any boys. They'd just get in the way of all of the great thinking she was doing 'cause that was all boys were good for. They were even worse than butterflies!

Carter padded out along the area infront of his cave and breathed deep. The fresh mountain air rejuevenated him like nothing else in this world, filling him with hope that maybe today could be a little better. He started down the path that would lead him closer to the rest of the free world. A little trip out the Mountain Road was in order, he concluded and was just so meandering down his path when he spotted her.

Molten amber eyes widened with shock. Harar's charge, Jess. Of course he knew her name, he was just that kind of male. Take note of everything and yet, be apart of nothing. Awkwardly his tail wrapped around his hind leg as he stood there, transfixed by her pale coat. White, he thought. The color of death.

The similarities were too similiar for him to take. Carter gritted his teeth and turned round, heading straight back up the winding path to his cave.

I need somewhere to hide from boys, Jess decided firmly. And I'll only ever let girls in, and only if I like 'em. Maybe not even. It'll be my cave where I do my things. Nodding along to her own clever plan, Jess stopped in her tracks and turned to survey the cliffs nearby. There was a cave there, wasn't there? Maybe it was abandoned - many were, since the pack had diminished in size since it's glory days. Full of ghosts. Jess shuddered delightedly and started to run towards the cave. She ignored the path and ran headlong through the bushes and up the slope. It was slow going, but distracted her enough that she didn't notice the brown dragon headed towards the same cave. Not that she was particularly observant at the best of times.
