Ohio to vote on taxes for police budget

This is one of those rare instances that I would vote for higher taxes, law enforcement are a vital part of the community and if we stretch them too thin who can say for sure what might happen.

I am definitely in favor of a stronger police presence, if someone is about to commit a crime what is the most likely thing for them to do before taking action? Most people thinking of breaking the law are going to look around first, if they see a strong police presence odds are they will not willingly break the law.

Police should be well funded but raising taxes isint the only way to get the money. cutting spending in areas that can live with out it would give plenty more money.

Drastictly cut salaries of mayor and city council. Its a good sized city, they make alot and can live with out the large salaries for a while.

That doesn't really help, they're doing it in California for the Legislature and it was the smallest cut they could've made.

cutting pay for a ligislature's pay for an entire state is very differant proportionaly than cutting city council's and mayors pay to aid the police of one city, so I would expect differant results

It's still a minor act, it's more symbolic than anything.

also not lay off anyone but do not hire new people for the ctiy for a while, and see what jobs could be consolidated with another position. And with the rest of city spening try and decide what is needs and what is just wants. Have fund raisers, collect donations, sell tickets to barbeques and picnics to raise money, there are always more options then simpley raise taxes

The second half of that would not work in most communities plus then you'll have to pay for clean up of an event. Frankly most of what you said is totally unrealistic and proves most of what people have come up with just won't cut it.

volunteers throwing trash away is expensive? I know there would be a small cost but profits would by far exceed the small cost of picking up trash. Ive lived in a lot of places and Ive seen in alot of communities that small things like that raise alot more money then people think, just my jrotc battalion alone raised a over a hundred thousand from doing those small things. why cant it work in other comunities?

It depends on the community. It's getting those volunteers. Plus the food, the tables, etc. would cost a lot too.

true there are cost but if all goes well then there will be a good profit. Volunteers should be easy most high schools have senior comunity service programs, church groups are usualy more then glad to help, very thing needed is out there one just needs to look

The city might be in trouble if it accepts church help, depending on location. And many high schools are cutting those programs. This is an idea that would've worked ten years ago, but not now.

its Columbus not Berkley, I doubt there are that many so hostile towards religion that they would complain about churches helping the comunity, that is only helping not interfering with the whole Church/State divide. why are high schools doing away with programs that cost little to nothing and benifit everyone envolved

Because most districts are looking for huge amounts of money, and will cut anywhere they can. Local schools around here have $15 million they need to make up for the 2009-2010 school year.

By the way, the church thing would more likely happen in the North East than California.
