Whats the most important steampunk accessory ('specialy to those of us who dress steampunk every day)

What did you choose? Why did you choose it? Do you have or just want what you chose? If so, post pics if you have them.

(and for those of you who don't know/care, feel free to discuss why)

depends on the Neovictorian or Steampunk setting I'm dressing to. A Post apocalyptic look requires goggles and face masks but gears are a universal embellishment think of them as sequins as opposed to the cloth one puts the sequins on

Since (if I had both money and time) I would go for either an aviation or a mechanics theme, of course I would choose the goggles, for to me they are imperative to both. Also, I'm already wearing a pocket watch most of the time, so it would be another must-have part of my outfit, together with my usual everyday accessories: cap, scarf and gloves.

A bit offtopic: I envy all of you who actually own goggles - last time I went into a "Must have!" frenzy, I was immediately brought back to reality by their typical price range...

the price-range is evil, which is why i have been making my own goggles. a faux-leather belt, some plastic from wine measuring cups (the ones that come with the wine on the cap) and some superglue. plus a pair of cheap sunglasses (not so cheap that they dont work though, my goggles are both practical and cool) (hehehe, sun-goggles!) is all that i needed for mine

I was quite lucky in that I got my goggles before steampunk became as popular as it is now, so it was quite easy to find some funky old goggles reasonably cheaply.
I have to say, I do feel that they are *the* steam punk item, but the goggles do not make the steampunk, so I shouldn't worry about it.

I don't feel like there is any one important steampunk item. A soot covered tinkerer and a dapper dandy are going to be dressed compleatly differntly and have differnt items on there person. For me, my favorite steampunky item out of my collection is my bandolier but I wouldn't suggest everyone go out and buy one on the spot.

My hardship is finding the proper clothing save for my corsets and tops. It's so hard to find a pair of boots in my size, once it gets to size ten they look so ugly.

But for me I say that it's not just the style or a certain item it's the attitude. You can go out in full attire and without the attitude and love for it to go along with it you're just a poser.

I'd have to say that really there is no one definitive Steampunk accessory. It's more of a "sum of the parts" thing. Probably, though, Goggles, because they're the most recognizable, but more than anything, the color scheme of an outfit is probably the most important.

Good thing for me, most of the clothes I wear are brown, so brass and copper are right up my alley!

I'd have to agree with the last two post, especially with Lady Bern, because attitude is a big part of how you dress I think. Your own way of dress should be expressed in your attitude. I don't own goggles, I used to back when I was in Middle School and at the time I wore them on and off for wanna be cosplay reason ( back in my weeaboo days ) but never thought of them as a essential item for much. I personally would say that the Steam Punk style in general can have a range of style depending on how you approach it. I myself have been a fan of more elegant styles recently. I like the Victorian look and go more based on that then the Sci-fi aspects of it with having to use items like goggles and gears. I also like general aspects of clothing like lace and frills, elegant patterns, and so on. Color really isn't that much of a deal with me, because honestly I'm not a fan of brown, and to stick to one color scheme in this style really would throw some one off. I'm more supportive of individuality then conforming, and even if some of the ways I dress are not Steam Punk approached by others, whatever because at least I know that I can make something of what I wear for myself and feel comfortable with it. The only real reason I am in this guild and am into this style is because I like aspects of it in terms of theme and content, not because I'm going to try and dress in standards of what people consider to be that exact style. Trust me, I've been back and forth with dress styles, from Goth to 80's Punk, I even had a renaissance stage for a while...and all I can say is that all styles may have some stage of conforming, but being able to have variety should matter. I'm not sure where this message is going, but I'd just thought I'd share that. People should be able to make what they want of a style instead of making essential needs for a style is probably a better approach to what I'm getting at.

I couldn't agree more. If the attitude is wrong, you may as well dress like an average joe.

I think I'm gonna have to agree with Xeig all the way with this one. There's just so much that completes a steampunk outfit, not just the little parts. It's like, if Stary Night by Van Gough was to have only one star in the whole picture. How odd it would really look, knowing the potential it, had that the artist refused to give attention to. It's the small things that add up to one big thing that counts. There's no true steampunk item, but everything combined into a whole proves what the real character of the steampunk genre can become.

Hat--Because the right hat can set the mood, no matter what else your wearing.
