I hear all this talk about how Obama will make history as the first black president, this tells me that america is racist. If america were not racist it would not be historical that obama will be president, it would not matter. If america were not racist america would not care if he was black or white.

I don't think so. I think it shows we are still aware of race, but are capable of looking past it. We're a long way away from removing "ethnicity" from all forms and stuff, but we aren't going to reject a valid candidate just because he's black either.

racism is acknowledging a difference between races, racism does not mean that one or more groups are disadvantaged, that is discrimination, racism is more general than discrimination.

wrong

racism is the irrational discrimination based upon race/ethnicity

just noticing skin color is not racism

racism, like any other -ism, is a set of beliefs that are reflected in decisions and attitudes.

There is only one true race, and that is the human race. I heard that in a song once and it stuck in my head all these years.

its a nice thought. And it would certainly serve humanity well. That is until the Star Trek-esque future where there ARE actual other races to worry about.

I always wondered about that. In some fiction, we get allegories to racism via tension between actually distinct fictional races.

Dwarves hate Elves and Romulans hate Kilingons. It wasn't until Data died that we get a sub category of Romulans that even the other Romulans hate.
