Shatranj, one of the first techniques for the game of Chess, which originated almost 1000 years ago within the Persian Empire. The earliest book ever written about Shatranj was Furrist (translated to: The art of chess, Furrist is pronounced 'few wrist').
Shatranj was basically chess, but each team on different sides of the board started off with several pieces which we don't have in modern day chess or have vanished with ancient Persian culture. These include the siege engine, giraffe, and tiger. Shatranj also had a different promotion system which is so complicated I had difficulty understanding it, so I won't talk about it.
The only other thing worth mentioning about chess is Tamerlane Chess, same thing different name, and a different era altogether.

The word "shatranj" is still used today in Arabic and Farsi languages.
