I was wondering, what are some basic Zen teachings?

The universe in a grain of sand, the sound of one hand clapping, and the like.
Haha, sorry. Anyway, we're lucky to have alot of people who have invested time into the study of Zen buddhism. I don't really know how to synthesize it, aside from the bare onlooker observation, that it stresses moment-to-moment awareness, and surprassing intellectual knowledge to being the pure witness. Another tenet of Zen is the notion that everything already has Buddha-nature, or the very nature of enlightenment. A pretty widespread idea is that Zen is a product of the Chinese mixing their many traditions (Taoism, etc) to Buddhism. Hope that helps, I'm sure another could give a better synthesis of ideas, sorry if it seems so messy, I'm listening to a George Carlin skit, so I'm not exactly absorbed in the mindful experience of writing this. =]
