To take off the nut on my bass and replace it with one that will fit good with the strings BEAD?

At the most, a little over a dollar.

To make the strings fit (if the neck can handle the extra tension caused by the heavier strings), just check how wide the strings are, mark the nut at the slots where they are too narrow, and file them out with really fine files.

However, take note that most necks (especially those on cheaper guitars) cannot handle the string tension of the thick 5-string bass-strings. Most necks have trouble adjusting to thicker EADG strings. Take that in mind as the neck lies in your lap, split in half... =P

Cut to the size of your neck, I recommend just taking of the old one and tracing it on a piece of paper and marking where the slots are so you have a template. Then,

As you can see, the files themselves are pretty expensive, so it may just be cheaper to have one made for you, call up a luthier or drive down to your local guitar shop, assuming they have a tech on staff, and see if they can do it for you. Also, the tension thing is a bit over blown, yeah there will be a difference, but it's nothing a bit of truss rod adjustment can't fix.

You don't have to re-do your whole nut just for BEAD you just need to re-tune and re-do the inotation. Filing down the nut is often a bad idea if you don't know what you are doing as well. You can have an experienced guitar tech work on it and it probably won't run more then ten bucks. Just remember if you ever want to switch back to EADG you will probably need to get a new nut.
