I'm still working out the details of the story of this character, but I have decided to go with the enchanted coin thing. I want to lay out the mechanics of how this enchantment is supposed to work, so you can tell me if there is anything that contradicts how magic is supposed to work in the world of the story. I have to do this first, because the way the coin works is supposed to directly influence the character's story, see?

Alright, so the coin essentially gives whoever owns it (Haven't decided on an exact mechanism for passing on of ownership, but that shouldn't be too complicated...) the power to dominate the minds of those around them,
given that the people around them are of sufficiently weak mind of course. Originally the idea was for anyone to believe any promise (no matter how ludicrous) that the owner of the coin made. I have discarded that, but am not completely adverse to returning to it if it would work better for the story.

I am considering adding to the coin's ability to perform this action based on how much the person it is being used on "experiences" the coin. That is to say, if it is in the user's possession but hidden, it will be a 1:1 ratio of his ordinary will power verses their ordinary will power as he tries to use it on people, but if the person it is being used on can see it, it becomes 1.5/1 or something like that. So on and so forth for the other senses. I'm not entirely sure how well that would play out, though.

Anyway, a few other things I considered:

The will of more than one person becomes collective against the user under some conditions. For example, two people who are best friends would have collective resistance, while two complete strangers probably wouldn't.

"Will power" might be replaced with intelligence, but I'm not sure yet.

Ownership will probably transfer via physical contact, in the sense that if the owner is no longer touching it but someone else is, ownership transfers. That is just to play on the previous thing about the more sensory information one is experiencing about the coin, the more effect it has. So, touching someone with it might almost assure they will be controlled, but there is the danger of losing the coin altogether... something like that.

Anywho, feedback would be much appreciated, since I don't know exactly how this kind of thing would fit into the world of the story.

My original intentions were to make magic very weak, and any powerful magic dificult to assertain or use for one's own purposes.

Vixen had the idea for a spell book that contained all the secret and powerful spells, and which allowed you to use them without sacrifice of any magical items. I, of course, was comendeering with this idea, and took it over, changing it so that the conditions for such a spell book would be that the person who was reading it would have to believe that the spells and curses and such in the book were only fantasy. Should the reader discover that the spells within the book are real, then they will no longer be able to read the book, and when the book is put out of site from them, they will not be able to find it again.

I quickly fell in love with this idea, and strongly encouraged vixen to use it due to its potential for mayhem. In hindsight that may have been the straw that broke the camels back. Ah well. I don't think she was very enthusiastic about writing with me anyways : (

At any rate, the point is that the conditions surrounding spells and enchanted items and such are largly based on their potential in the story. The book in this instance, was changed so that the power not only came with consequences but came with conditions that would have added the theme of ignorance to the user, or possibly even tragedy, seeing as anyone could inflict chaos on any given thing should they only chance to read it.

There is also the mask of possible coincidence that must be maintained though. Another theme in this story is that it is set in the past, and due to that must not do anything that would change that past. After all, If someone were to summon a golem made of snow, and make it tap dance in through the streets of london, I'm sure we would have heard about it somwhere.

Then is the other side of magic though; for with it can you explain past events that went without explination, and fill in gaps that were previously unfilled. The posibilities are near endless.

~~~
As for your coin, I still like it. I think you should restrict the conditions a bit more though, as the coin seems a tad too powerful. The condition of beleiving any promise, along side a simpler means of using it's power (touching a person might be too obvious, but allowing them to see it wouldn't) would restrict your character more, and give you a better idea of what he or she can do in the story. You may need this coin to exert utter influence though, and if you do, then I suggest you find some down side to using the coin to offer possible restriction. Trying to find a back story for the coin might aid you here. I would suggest looking around for myths about coins from different cultures. In greek mythology, I think, people would put coins inside the mouths of the dead so that they could pay charun, the fairyman for the river of styx, for safe voyage. Also, in grimmonian folk lore snakes would bring you treasures if you fed them, or even struck their fancy with a blue handkerchief. You might be able to asertain a coin that way. Wells and rivers might also grant you such magic things.
You should think on this.
I will formulate more of a story, and a method of building that story, when I am not so busy, for now I have 5 higher level exams to study for. Tah tah for now.
Just an update.
Though almost all of us are ghosts at the moment, and atleast two fifths no longer willing to work on the story anymore, I will still be working on and off on the plot guidelines and collaborative mechanics.
Come the middle of may I will be done with tests and able to devote much more time to this venue, but until that time I will be just as ghostly as the rest of you.
Before I dissappear off the map completely I will be posting a general synopsis of the story, and whatever other information I can post and condense on the main thread.
Should those of you who are, or wish to become, part of this collaborative find yourselves bored over the next week then I suggest you take a look at the synopsis so that you can have a better idea of where this story stands.
As always, nothing posted on the main thread is permanent until written in one of our stories, until that time everything is up for discussion.
