Apparently, abortion rates are down, and we're not sure why. The article lists a few possible reasons and explains them a bit.

But how do you personally feel knowing that there are less abortions being performed?
Does being pro-choice change how you feel about it?

I don't know how to feel.
Especially if it's due to less access to abortion, if that means more women are carrying unwnted pregnancies because they feel obligated to or because they have no other choice.

I imagine some people WANT them to feel obligated, but still. Doesn't seem like the best reason to have a baby.

I'd love it if there wasn't that wondering, you know? Like if we could definitively say "Abortions are down because women don't need as many, birth control is more effective, more women have access to family planning materials, education works, yay!!!" but apparently we can't.

I wish I could say that I think abortion rates are down because of our thorough and comprehensive sex ed prevalent throughout most of the United States, and the gradual spread of knowledge and education concerning abortion, birth control, prevention, and pregnancy myths...

I am sad because one of the most likely reasons abortions are down is due to their unavailability.

There was a recent article that the US is bucking the trend of other western nations in that it has a rising birth rate (2.1 replacement rate met), and that the most likely causes for this were: Poverty, lack of contraceptive education, lack of available abortions, and immigrants (both legal and illegal).

It is sad that there are women out there who do not want children and who are unable to prevent it from happening. This same children will grow up in a household with parents that did not want them, in poverty, likely without a good education, and that is a damned shame.

Every child a wanted child.

I'd be cheering... if it was because of better birth control, more access to birth control, and more education... that would mean a higher percentage of pregnancies were WANTED pregnancies. I really wish we could make it so that abortion was very rarely needed. It's a necessity that it be legal, but I wish it wasn't necessary.

But, I doubt that's the reason... if the reason is because there's less access to abortion, then this shows we need to get out more abortion providers. A while ago, I saw something that said part of the reason providers have been going down is that doctors who saw what happened with illegal abortion are now retiring, and the new generation, while I'm sure many (not all, we know that, and I have no idea of a percentage) are pro-choice intellectually, they don't understand why THEY might need to perform abortions.

You know what I think? Every OB/GYN should know how to perform abortions. Part of their standard medical training. Every OB/GYN who provides surgical service (some GYN's refer pregnancies out) should provide a surgical abortion to their patients if asked. Of course, that may not be the best idea right now, considering how many doctors are NOT becoming OB's due to the high insurance rates... we don't want to discourage OBs... but, sometimes I wonder if no OB would be better than an OB that doesn't listen and help you with your wishes.
