(Sorry for the two topics in a day thing. xP I've been buzzing on current events today, though. O; ) http://awesome.goodmagazine.com/transparency/008/images/008_abortion_laws.gifGreat Britain surprised me, I thought for sure they'd be just as liberal as America on the issue, if not more. Ireland also surprised me, it makes me sad that such a fine country would be so...anti-woman. The idea that 20 more countries are completely anti-choice than pro-choice sickened me, though.

Every time I think of Ireland I get the song 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' by U2 stuck in my head [/off topic]
Some of these countries really surprised me. Like Singapore. Prude-assed Singapore allows abortions. Or the tiny island of Malta in the middle of the Mediterranean sea, surrounded by countries that allow abortion and it's allows none. Same with Liechtenstein.
Georgia is another wonder. Were they not the first country ever to declare Christianity (the hard core kind) as their country's religion? Yet they allow abortions.
Another - What's the big difference between Sri Lanka and India?
New Zealand is just depressing.

What's funny (Tragic, I meant. Choice of words gonk ) is that this map only says so much. For example, while Ireland sits in the strictest category and Poland in a more permissible one, in practice I believe it's easier for an Irish woman to obtain an abortion than for a Polish one.
There's a lot of fringe regulations and conditions that can either restrict or promote abortion access. The protesters and bombing of abortion clinics comes to mind, as does the right of apothecaries to deny selling a patient birth control or Plan B in the US.

Oxymoronic Username Wait.. Ireland is anti-choice? Then, why were there protestors over there when I went? They had photoshopped miscarriages and everything! gonk Hm.. Germany allows abortion? No wonder I love that country... The thing about this map that pisses me off, is that it doesn't specify what hoops women have to jump through to get an abortion.
Like we all know what goes on in america, but what about germany that is the same color?
Well germany has it's host of problems. First it's a lot like other countries in that you have to get 2 doctors approvals - which can be hard enough BUT you also have to get permission from your husband/boyfriend/the sperm donor.
A good chunk of my ancestory is german. Hell my last name is blatantly german, but when I took Deutsche I (German 1) for my junior year and actually started learning about the country, I started to hate it. What am I trying to say? To at least learn something about the country before hopping aboard a plane/ship/train and starting over, as if seems many of you just pick any country at random.
Yeah, that map pisses me off. razz

No wonder I love that country... Because they want to make it illegal for woman to leave Ireland to get an abortion in a neighboring country.

Yeah, that map pisses me off. razz I'm taking German. I'm a sophmore, but I'm in German 3, already. All in all, I know the country and the language pretty well, but I thought the two doctors and the potential father thing was in Austria. Thus, I admit that I'm a major idiot for not doing any research before opening my big mouth. :D (Eh, I plan on moving to Canada, anyway. I love Germany, but Canada is much more fitting.) As for Ireland... They're acting like every other church in my area. No, that's not a compliment. Come to think of it, I'm giving Ireland a giant "******** you"..

20 Shades of Crazy Ireland also surprised me, it makes me sad that such a fine country would be so...anti-woman. Ireland is not such a "fine country". People here are VERY old-fashioned in their views. Pro-choicers here have been trying their damnedest for so long to get abortion laws changed, but we are the minority, unfortunately. Dont get me wrong, I love my country & my heritage, but the vast majority of people are close-minded and set in their ways. The law on abortion here is one of the major reasons I'd be tempted to move away.

UK is pro-choice and it's very easy to attain an abortion or Plan B here - possibly easier than US I'd say. Plus they're going to 'review' the abortion laws, so for only one doctor's approval or something... : D
