Mario seems to be getting into all the sports lately. This could be quite cool, and will perhaps will also do like Soul Calibur 2 did with Link and help the game sell well on the GC.

You know what would be creepy? Mario football.
"And the pass is made! Bowser is at the 50 yard line! He is running for the touchdown, and- WOW! PRINCESS PEACH HAS TACKLED BOWSER WITH AMAZING POWER! NOW BOWSER IS ON A RAMPAGE AND IS BURNING ANYTHING IN HIS- oh crud." (a very weird MF game)
"And the pass is made! Bowser is at the 50 yard line! He is running for the touchdown, and princess peach has attempted a tackle, but has bounced right off bowsers shell, and right onto a toad! BOWSER HAS MADE A TOUCHDOWN! THE SCORE IS NOW 70-3 JUST IN TIME FOR THE HALFTIME SHOW!" (A more realistic, but unfair, MF game)
Yeah, so you see, a mario football game wouldn't work.
As for your suggestion for Mario Hockey, wouldn't bowser be bigger than the goal?

Problem is, didn't the Simpsons do that sorta thing with Grand Theft Auto/Driver/True Crime?
They had a popular game series and infected it with their own brand of yellowness, thus making the game boring and unplayable.
I wouldn't think that Mario suits the basketball world sweatdrop
I mean, I'll pick it up, but still...Tennis, Golf, Kart, DDR and baseball too...Gah...Donkey Konga was good at least. sweatdrop <3 my bongos.
They're milking the Nintendo and Mario world for anything they can now. I think they need to stop at some point and make a traditional Mario game (along the lines of the new DS game, but still) and make it fun, instead of just bringing out new Mario/Nintendo sports games.
Hell, SCII was terrible. And the only reason thousands upon thousands of FG scrubs picked it up was because of the green-shirted elf, which didn't make it fun. Guilty Gear's Eddie > SCII's Link. (Hell, I'll go back and say that Voldo/Ivy/Nightmare owned him instead. Because they did, basically. And if those people that constantly used Link tried to play in an arcade or a professional tournament ((Tourney = Arcade = No Link = Scrub: Wah)), they were thoroughly ******** fat, little (albiet insanely-high jumping) Italian plumber isn't supposed to be slam-dunking, he's supposed to be out squashing Goombas and trouncing those Turtles we know as 'Teh Kooooopahs!' ('Teh' intended.)
All we need now is Sycronized Swimming, a non-mini-game hocky-game (a la Mario Party 5), Mario Badminton and Super Mario World NFL.
And hey, let's throw in Super Mario Soccer, too.
JUST BECAUSE WE CAN!
(To clarify...I'm not trying to purposely bash Nintendo. They've been a staple of my childhood since...childhood. ((=/)) But I know where they need to draw the line, and trying to make game involving characters that don't belong there ((like Link in SCII)) is a way of squeezing the cash cow for all the milk ((money)) they're worth. Looking back thoroughly, I thought they were making an NBA using JUST Mario characters, but it is just basically a Link - SCII deal.)
Oh, and just to show that I'm not seeming like I'm picking on Nintendo;
Capcom were just as pathetic for forcing Dante (Devil May Cry) into Viewtiful Joe on PS2 to boost sales for those people whom were interested in one game but not the other. razz

Hey, Link didn't suck on Soul Calibur 2. If you can actually practice with him and become skilled, then you can own any computer opponents. Plus, if you are losing terribly with Link they installed a sure-win with his moves. If you are right next to the edge of the level, then you can easily win just by grabbing them and then you'll kick them out of the arena. I do agree though that they are going a little too far with the Mario sports. I'd would agree with you that they need to try and make a traditional Mario game on the DS, but I'm not going to say that because they are. I've even seen a screen shot in a magazine my friend has of a Goomba that took a super mushroom for himself in the game. Just know that they haven't completely abandoned the old-skool gameplay yet.

SSJMole Hey, Link didn't suck on Soul Calibur 2. If you can actually practice with him and become skilled, then you can own any computer opponents. Computer opponents suck the proverbial a**. Play the world's number one Kilik player using Link. Oh, wait, he plays arcade. Arcade = No Link. SSJMole Plus, if you are losing terribly with Link they installed a sure-win with his moves. If you are right next to the edge of the level, then you can easily win just by grabbing them and then you'll kick them out of the arena. I'm unsure if anyone else is aware of this, but Link has a name among the Arcade World = "Teh Cheapz0rz." Although he's unbelievably easy to beat if you're good enough, he can prove some problem against the lower players. Either way, he can't be used in professional tournaments, making him pointless to use in the first place. SSJMole I do agree though that they are going a little too far with the Mario sports. I've seen a few screenshots of this game in one of my Nintendo Official Magazines, it's been proven. They are making a traditional Mario game, with 3-D graphics. (So basically 3-D figures working 2-D.) The working title is Super Mario DS.

Gaughan Even tho it would have been better if they did make their own game, EA are Nintendo's biggest third party, and they dont want to lose them as they are a vital part of a console if you like it or not. Probelly EA looked at the Cube's Soul Cal' 2 and seen that Link made that become the highest sold from the other two and are tring to do the same thing with Mario character. Actually, it was Nintendo's idea to put the characters in it, EA didn't come up with it.
