As I'm sure many of you have heard the State of Michigan is on the verge of a governmental shutdown. Lansing is in a crunch to meet the deadline under 90 minutes from now, it has been forcasted that the midnight deadline will not be reached. The plan that is being put forth is to increase taxes. The tax increase is forecasted to speed up the rate of people fleeing Michigan.

A governmental shutdown of the entire state might not be such a bad thing. It would shatter the illusion most Americans I know seem to have that Governemt is all powerful and all knowing. Yes, they basically think the Government is G*d. Having the government of an entire state completly and utterly fail would be a wake up call that we can't depend on government to solve everything for us. I doubt there will be total chaos either, since city and county governments would still be intact. Nothing would really change, since these governments would probably stagnate everything to keep the problem from becoming worse. When the state government finally gets its act together, people will rest easier, but they may think twice about relying so much on governement. If a state government can fail, the Federal government can fail, and issues like Social Security and Health care threaten to do just that. I expect the "Michigan Shutdown" would lead to long term changes in the way we think about the Government.
